I saw some of the so called "horror movies" and they are like pg compared to todays films. I would be surprised if they were ever considered scary at all. Though i havent seen each and every one.

The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween (Original), Nightmare on Elm Street (original) were considered scary I think.

Honestly, my biggest enjoyment when watching old horror movies is seeing how they're crafted. Like, the original Halloween does not scare me, but the way they set up everything so that it feels like Michael Myers is omnipresent is extremely impressive.

Or maybe it's just because sometimes they manage to create an extremely unsettling situation, even if it's not necessarily "scary". Jack's and Danny's conversation while the former is going insane in "The Shining", Frankenstein's monster 'playing' with a little girl without realizing he's killing her, the way the camera moves in the credit scenes of "The Conversation" that looks way too much like surveillance (though that one's a psychological thriller rather than horror)...

Watch Halloween (1978) and The Omen (1976). You will be convinced.

Depends on your taste really. I thought the Exorcist was a disturbing. That's from the 70s IIRC.

One of the most disturbing scenes to watch still is in the original Frankenstein when he unwittingly kills the little girl while playing with her.

Nah. Some of the classic horror movies are not scary to me even though they're great movies. Some movies today could be scarier if done well enough.

Yes

I hide under a blanket when the scary stuff comes on and I wee my pants sometimes.

When my girlfriend comes over I try pretend she is scared but it is really me. Like when the gremlins turned into scary gremlins I threw up in my popcorn and shat my pants and I accused my girlfriend friend of farting to cover it up

@rawsos: I would say that before the 90's or the 80's there were less extremelly scary movies like now, but there were a few:

  • Shinning
  • The Thing
  • The Fly
  • Evil Dead
  • Poltergeist
  • Videodrome
  • Re-animator
  • Alien
  • Carrie
  • The Exorcist
  • Hills have eyes
  • Psycho

Those are the most well known, but at that time there were lost of obscure very odd and freaky movies.

The Fly ( 1986 film ) with Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis was one of the Scariest Films I had seen in the 1980's. The ending sequence gave me chills for years.

If you have that question, it means you didn't really follow the movie !

I would also add The Elephant Man has a freaky movie.

It depends on if you're desensitized to it as well

Another film that gave me chills was something more recent that came out called Teeth. Made you think twice about having Hanky Panky with Women.

I was 5 when I first saw Children of the Corn. Living in the country I'm like yeah I could see a cult of kids taking over a town in the middle of nowhere. I went to a horror con and could hardly look at the actor who played Malachi (Courtney Gains).

Jaws is a horror classic that scared so many people from swimming at the beaches. That opening scene thrashing around the girl...

The facts. Talk to people who watch horror all the time and most people are only going to bring up the same classic movies that they consider scary.

I think horror movies lost a lot of their punch when everyone started having a cellphone.

@king_saturn: The fly scarred me as a kid. Cujo too. There's something unique about those movies that inspires fear more than most modern day movies.

I don't find modern horror movies scary at all. I've seen some I would describe as gross and disgusting but not scary.
