So I recently came upon an old forum titled "Can you believe Obama apologized for Hiroshima?"

https://comicvine.gamespot.com/forums/off-topic-5/can-you-believe-obama-apologized-for-hiroshima-1794377/

Thankfully, this BS was locked... but still.

I'm actually amazed that there are people crazy enough on this site to think that the use of nuclear weapons on a civilian population was justified.

The recurring argument seems to be "it was self-defence after Pearl Harbour"

During Pearl Harbour, 2,403 people were killed, 68 of which were civilians. This is a tragedy, yes but was it really f***ing necessary to retaliate by killing 140,000 in Hiroshima and 70,000 in Nagasaki?

Is being proud of mass murder what it means to be American? Really? Because people are arguing that it is "unamerican" to apologise for these atrocities.

There is a lot of BS on CV, but it's largely just arguing over characters, mostly harmless stuff. But this kind of s**t... it scares me.

If they dropped more nukes maybe we wouldn't have to deal with weebs, so I'd say they didn't go far enough tbh.

If they didn't drop the nukes the alternative would be to invade Hiroshima with a full-on assault which would've cost even more lives. They already warned them to surrender and they didn't.

War is hell. Drastic measures and decisions need to be made and people will die.

World War 2 is fought as a total war.

Meaning every men, women, and children were designed and treated as part of the Emperor's war machine.

They either served directly as soldiers and revervists or indirectly as people who manned the factories that produces weapons, bullets, tanks, ships, vehicles, foods, medicines, etc.

Well children of course were innocent, but back then, the US don't have a laser guided precision bombs, and Global Positioning Satellites that can discriminate war factories from local nursery school building.

They just have to make the best of what they have.

Prioritizing their own personal safety and interest.

Leaders and policy makers back then don't have any idea how devasting nuclear weapon is if use in a dense urban population.

Not to mention that they already fire bombing the hell out of Tokyo already and killing Japanese civilians by thousands.

People should learn history and stop this prepostorous attempt to apply their modern day moral high ground on people who have to deal with a very different predicament.

Yeah it wasn't justified but what makes it even worse is America saw the Japanese were coming & the higher ups told everyone to ignore them because they wanted the attack on Pearl Harbour to happen then they claim "Oops, we thought those were our plains on maneuvers" that is such BS. The suits knew exactly what was going on.

Officials knew we were about to be attacked but chose not to raise any alarms & just let it happen just to give America an excuse to test their new super weapon on people.

@insomnimaniac: Ah. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised.

Anyways I g2g, but I'll respond to u soon, thank you for the clarification.

Their explanation for not raising the alarm was that they though the plains on radar were American plains & that's total BS, they would've known exactly were their plain are & that the plains on radar weren't theirs.

A suit is just a government or military official.

Not their choice of targets, it probably wouldn't have mattered what America bombed so why target civilians rather than say the Shimofusa or Shizuhama Air Bases?

It being somewhat justifiable or not doesn't prevent it from being a horrible act of mass murder against hundreds of thousands of innocents in one of the gruesome ways possible. What happened was horrible, and extremely, extremely unfortunate and as far as I'm concerned, that's what matters nowadays.

Obama’s apology should be considered in the context of our time. I think perhaps you’re placing a moral dimension to what is in effect a politician’s strategic positioning with another country and his own constituents. That said, it should be obvious that what was done was an immense tragedy and an immense act of force against innocent life.

Obama’s apology is pretty hollow on account of his not being responsible and the potential gain he gets though, so I wouldn’t sweat it.

You shouldn't be surprised. The right wing edginess was brewing up quickly back then. Now the edgelords are in full force and paradoxically glorify things that make our country strong, while supporting and looking past the things that now make us look weak and dumb.

Also, the funniest thing about that thread was the edgelords getting mad at Obama for apologizing when he literally made a point of NOT doing so. All he did was show sympathy for the victims of the bombing which was a war time act. It really highlights how confidently uninformed they are.

Not going to lie, I am a bit surprised. I expected the 'No apologies, kill the weebs!' and the 'We should apologize because never justified!' but the youtube-tier conspiracy theorist was not expected. But in a world of Scientology and time shares, I shouldn't be surprised.

Why would the Japanese Government care if an airfield was bombed when that has been happening throughout the entire war? Airfields being destroyed doesn't matter, Large Cities do, that's war. It may not be pretty and humane, but in terms of the long-run, it was the smarter, actually more merciful choice.

I see some people didn't like my comment, oh well.

No, it's not morally right, it was a terrible event in history that should never happen again, but in terms of being justifiable, it is indeed down to the definition.

I'm not taking back my words and I'll never support any apologies for the event, it simply had to be done.

Now for Obama apologizing? Eh, I definitely don't support it, but let him do what he wants I guess, I wouldn't make a big deal out of it, he's made bigger disappointments in his career than this lol.

For a non shitpost answer, yeah the responses in this thread are pretty awful and it's by no means just a CV thing unfortunately. What the Americans did to the Japanese in response to Pearl Harbor is completely and utterly morally reprehensible. They firebombed the shit out of them, murdering >100,000 civilians, then dropped a nuke on Hiroshima murdering >100,000 more, then apparently that wasn't enough so they dropped ANOTHER nuke on them. War crime/Crime against humanity/State terrorism name it whatever you want, the attacks were purely in the interest of causing as much death to the japanese populus as possible while testing their new toys.

If anyone thinks that if the roles were reversed and instead Japan nuked the US that they wouldn't have been hung for War Crimes and the event would be remembered as the biggest tragedy in US history, they're full of shit, probably because they've got the flag shoved up their asshole.

But America is the G O O D G U Y of the world bravely defending us from the evil subhuman Eurasians, so they can of course do no wrong. Just like they aren't doing any wrong in the Middle East currently, right?

With that said, what U.S.A did is not right and was an 4sshole and d1ck move, kill more than 100.000 innocents that have zero things to do with the freaking war only because your military base was nuked, is not an excuse, I hope whoever dropped the bomb died a terrible death and had a terrible life.

In all seriousness, there is only one goal when in a fight; Beating your opponent. Anything that can be done to achieve this can be considered "good". Anything that cannot achieve this can be considered "bad". There are no morals in a fight. Anything outside of beating your opponent is ancillary. If you want to be a winner in this world you can't be too good.

More specifically, it would of cost upwards of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of Allied lives to invade the Japanese mainlands. Japan was already on the brink of surrender and just needed a little push. Why spend hundreds of thousands of lives on a massive operation when one pilot can do the same thing? It's just logic.

There was a race going on. Who could make the biggest, deadliest, most destructive weapon and deploy it first. US at atomic weapons beat out Japanese biological/chemical ones.Possibly by a very narrow margin.

(The US gave immunity to the scientists working on them on the condition that they come work for us. The next war... Agent Orange.)

Well, according to my great grandfather before he passed away, since he worked for IG Farben before and during WWII in Germany, he actually offered refuge to many German families in the IG Farben factories in Frankfurt, American bombers did not successfully target the factories , everything around the factories was in ruins but not the factory, well, he told my father that the U.S was interested in a recently developed fuel by IG Farben, so I'm not discarding that the U.S did not target IG Farben factories because of political interests and possible deals they had with IG Farben, but American bombers were really accurate, in fact, a lot of our historic buildings and churches, were intact.
