So in Brad Bird's "The Incredibles", there is a scene that shows Mr. Incredible finding out that most of his colleagues and friends that were superheroes and heroines were all murdered by his nemesis and former biggest fan, Syndrome, in order to obtain data on how to create a robot that could completely overpower all superheroes. This scene was considered by critics to be an example of genocide in movies. However, what is your opinion on the matter?

Would you consider The Incredibles' "Kronos" scene to be one of the darkest moments in superhero films?

Some of the weirdos who for some reason consider Syndrome to be the true ‘hero’ of the film conveniently skip over the fact that he’s a murderer.

I was certainly shocked the first time I saw that scene, it was rather dark. I think it feels so dark because the rest of the movie had a much, much lighter tone. But I think it did serve two purposes, one is that it pulls audiences deeper into the story as now you really do feel bad for Mr. Incredible to the point where you become invested in how he is going to deal with this reality. The other function is to give the adults seeing the movie a deeper more complex story that they can really loose themselves in. Often children's movies can be dull for adults due to their predictability and repetitive themes, this scene really helps break those tendencies. Ultimately I do not think this is one of the darkest moments in superhero movies but feels that way because of the scope of the movie (its target audience being children) and because it is an animated film.

wouldn't say darkest in superhero stories, but in terms of Pixar films it's easily near, if not the top in terms of implication.

It was definitely one hell of a mood swing for a Pixar movie.

Yep, especially for a children's movie.

No, the following scene where Bob thought his family died and threaten to kill the blonde was darker.

It's kinda correct that it is a form of genocide since it's a campaign to murder everyone from a select group of people. But I don't think it's that dark to be honest due to how it's been presented, likely due to it being a feature aimed at kids. Not to mention how Edna Mode details all the fatal mishaps a cape can bring... like being sucked into a jet engine in front of all the passengers.

As for darkest moments in superhero films, I am kinda leaning towards Rorshachs story in Watchmen where he goes in with the intention of saving a little girl from a kidnapper only to find out she's been killed and fed to the dogs.

"dark" and "good" are by no means mutually exclusive.

Yeah, I guess so. I'd also count the flashback scene from Up (particularly where Ellie has a miscarriage) as another really dark moment.

It would've been more impactful if we didn't see some of those same superheroes dying at the hands of their capes moments before.

No. To me, this is darker, especially for a kid's movie. This is one of my favorite scenes in a superhero movie.

Seen it. Even though it followed the graphic novel page by page for the most part and had great aesthetics, I wasn't that impressed by it as a film.
