So I know it sounds dumb, but I think bat woman, batman, and bat girl might sound just as dumb if we weren't used to hearing it.
Why was Robin not called Bat Boy?
Because it sounds terrible, and Bob Kane and Bill Finger were smart enough to know that "Robin" was a better idea. *shrug*

I believe Harley Quinn and Joker would always call him that in the animation movies and shows in the 90's.
They probably didn't want him to sound like the child on a baseball team that collects the bats after a hit. Especially at the time when he was created when baseball was the supreme sport in the US.
This.
Because it sounds f***ing stupid.
I was about to post this word for word.
@kittyparker13: How would naming him batboy be redundant?

@gymgoer205: Batman and Batboy sounds really redundant.

I dunno if the costume came before the name, but if it did, it's because the costume is the same colors as a robin.
Because he doesn't dresses up like a Bat.
He doesn't dress up like a robin either.
He has the red breast. And the robin flies as a bat does. That and Robin has a boyish ring to it, which, together with the colorful costume, reflects Robin's status as Batman's kid sidekick.

Stephanie was a Robin too.

The name evokes childhood and adventure, I guess.

For a few days and wasn't that just to get Drake's attention?
