even though DC has better comics right now

Fanservice... which is a tendency from Disney's commercial views...

DC focuses its plot quality and sometimes they do some fanservice, but priorities are priorities, that's why DC currently has a better plot quality in their stories.

I would say it has more to do with buying habits, nostalgia and hope.

Marvel exploded in the 60'ties and 70'ties, alot of people grew up on their stuff back when it was truly great stuff. Alot of people were drawn in with the 90'ties as well, and it's alot of these people who are still buying Spiderman and X-men books, along with all the new comers thanks to cartoons and movies, all of them buy buy the books they have for years due to habit and in the hope that they suddenly become great again.

DC on the other hand, have suffered a bit of simply being good most of the time rather than great and they haven't done alot of these things where hordes of people were pulled to them for a long period of time and got them stuck, save on perhaps Batman. Great events or one off runs like Metal and Mister Miracle don't sustain the company for very long... and especially not when these books are more likely to be victims of a trade waiting audience.

I don't know where these numbers are coming from. DC sold more comics in 2017. Out of the top 10 selling books of 2017 only 3 of them were Marvel.

Yeah, this is like a year to late here; even though this was actually a relevant thread some time ago.

That being said, some people are wondering if the changes coming to Marvel soon will get some of those numbers back, since a lot of us have been treated so poorly by Marvel lately. For instance, the Thor fans... I think that explains those numbers lately very easily when talking about the whole.

I think that's a good assessment!

Wasn't it the New Teen Titans that really helped save DC?

DC has been doing very well with their comics lately and they are better than what Marvel has been putting out. Marvel has a big edge in movies and that is overshadowing whatever DC is doing.

@saberscar223: Didn't say it was a bad thing in fact it's a good thing to do. Offering newer and newer readers a fresh jumping on point. It's what made New52 work and eventually Rebirth. Promising that things are gonna change and giving the illusion of keeping the customer in mind always does good for these two. And Marvel has had several different shakeups that keep keeping things fresh. While it annoys longtime readers sometimes newer readers latch on

@mraugen: Yeah, that's the sad truth, that the entire comic industry itself is having problems right now. Honestly, it makes these fandom wars seem like two sinking ships that are flipping each other off while also trying to drain all the water from their own boat before they go under.

@citizensurfer: hal jordan and the green lantern corps is pretty good. Marvel had good books like silver surfer, nightmask and starbrand, they cancelled these, started pushing Street level trash "for the casuals" and now I'm sitting here waiting for a good cosmic story, nova and quasar are welcomed.

I imagine it as two sinking boats with bitter guys using bucket to drain the water awhile throwing the water toward the other boat.

It's just scary how accurate that is, especially since there are plenty of comic creators who've worked for both companies and plenty whom have expressed interest in crossovers. It's mostly the fans where a lot of the bitterness comes from.

Marvel simply knows how to build more hype than DC.

Each company really doesn't have that many characters to actually look forward too, but Marvel makes almost everything they do seem "special" by marking it as some once-in-a-life-time thing, marking some change, or renumbering. Lots of renumbering. Plus the movies help.

DC has better stories, and more love to it these days (Imo).

Marvel is just a better machine.

Image is better than both imo, but what you gonna do?
