I thought all he could say was I am Groot?
Why is Groot talking here? I thought he couldnt talk?
I can't recall the exact context but I believe this is a dream or in Groot's head or something like that. Rocket does t exactly call Groot 'Your Highness'.
Also Groot's thought have been physichically projected in the past by others, and he does actually have quite the well spoken and poetic mind.
Maybe it's just showing his conversation with Rocket? To everyone else it's just I am Groot but to the reader you're seeing what he's really saying to Rocket. No idea if that's the actual context though.
@feartheliving: that's what I was thinking.
iirc groot can speak but all we hear "i am groot" because his species something.......................................................................
"I am Groot" didn't come around until after Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning started writing him (their explanation was that his vocal cords had hardened so that he could only make those sounds). This is from the Annihilation Conquest: Star-Lord miniseries, which predates that.
@those_eyes: Pretty sure it's because Peter Quill aka Star Lord has a universal translator allowing the readers to understand form his point of view. IIRC it later breakes and they can no longer understand Groot.

this is the correct answer
@xwraith: You're right. Had to double check. I hadn't read that far back in awhile.
