because Spider-Man is mostly red, and green is it's complimentary colour, probably making it easier to artists to distinguish the villains from the heroes for the reader.

Red and Green look good together. Seriously, artists pay attention to that sort of thing.

@CrimsonCake: Hulk being green was a misprint if i remember correctly, hence why he his is grey in his first appearence... green also is an obvious colour for radiation

I think it had something to do with art of the comic book.Stan Lee said they had to change his color due to the colors of the panels I think and Green makes him stand out more.

@ozeol: Yea it was basically intentional by the artists because of Spider-Mans colour scheme

This isn’t an absolute rule, but I remember reading somewhere that Silver Age Marvel used to associate primary colors with heroes, and secondary colors with villains. It’s not just Spidey, look at Cap (Zemo, Zola, MODOK, even Red Skull used to wear a green suit), Iron Man (Mandarin), Thor (Loki), FF (Doom, Diablo, Mole Man, Skrulls, Galactus) etc.

That's interesting.

Heroes: Primary colours

Villains: Secondary colours

Anti-Heroes: Black/white/Grey
