Because he has to spin his hands on the air in order to open a portal. He can't just make a portal anywhere he wants and he was probably holding Thanos a the time.

he was more or less asleep at this point. At worst Spiderman could've taken over restraining Thanos' other arm as we in the clip I provided that Thanos is not resisting at all on the arm with the gauntlet,
The Portal is static. Someone would have to pull his arm into it. He would have probably seen it and countered that.
Otherwise, it would rely on Thanos rushing into it. In which case, with the space gem, I'm pretty sure he could just punch the portal out of the air as soon as he saw it.

Stephen saw the future, he probably saw this possibility play out, along with a million strategies even more effective. And even if any of those resulted in Thanos getting lost for, say 100 years... after those 100 years, he's going to come back and still do what he has to do. Strange was looking for a way to permanently solve the situation.

All I can say is, you're probably underestimating Thanos. He's one of the strongest, smartest, and most determined people in the MCU, all at once. He's basically Hulk, Steve Rogers and Tony combined. Strange saw the futures and saw that there is only one way to beat Thanos. So that means Thanos would have escaped this situation, 100%. It's confirmed. There's no explanation for it, but there's also no explanation for the other million futures that Strange witnessed. This thread is arbitrary because we could list an infinite amount of strategies and ask "Why didn't they do that" but it's all just going to come down to the fact that Thanos is smarter than any of us understand. There is something which we literally can't think of, some genius, unpredictable tactic or showing of raw strength, that apparently ends with this plan failing. Strange saw it, he confirmed it, doesn't really matter what the details are, because Strange confirmed that this plan would not be enough.
@aka_aka_aka_ak: More or less asleep? Thanos was still actively fighting against Mantis’s ability (“be quick, he is very strong”). You’re aware that the part right before the part you provided is peter holding onto the other arm right? He comes to help with the other arm because tony calls him over, and tony calls him over because thanos is still resisting and holding a firm grip in the gauntlet. And he IS providing resistance with his arm, why do yo I think that it’s such a struggle with them trying to get it off of him even with mantis using her ability the best she could?
Either way, Strange was specifically trying to help restrain the other arm while peter initially helped, then moved to help try to remove the gauntlet from a thanos that was still having a firm grip on it
He almost certainly DID try it in some of the 14 million futures where he lost. He knows what future he wins in, and that dictated every single action he took. Simple as that.
Also I think he was busy using those crimson bands to hold back Thanos’s other arm, because mantis couldn’t fully subdue him, unlike how she could against Ego.
It's not like he was sipping tea on the sidelines. Lol. He was holding with all his might the other arm. Unless he conjure up two more arms out of back like iron spidey then... Hmm..
I am going with the people who are saying he saw the future, maybe Thanos has to win for some reason to make changes that are needed for the Universe. Like getting Captain Marvel there and changing up the Avengers, since a lot of them are leaving after the next Avengers movie.
