I believe Marvels continuity is anchored by the Fantastic Four and Spiderman. They may be some of the most important characters to the Company. Cap, Iron-Man, Spidey, Hulk among others are pretty big figures in pop culture, IMO

I think Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are iconic for DC in both importance and pop culture.

Sry I couldn't narrow it down to 1 character.

It's obviously Superman, I know many people don't like his character but even they can't deny the fact that Superman is the most important character from these characters listed

This, and also Superman is well liked.

Most people who hate him haven't read a single comic, or are just fanboys to be honest.

I'm a Marvel fan yet I do like Superman because of his good rogue gallery, good stories and good movies.

@tony_stark82: I know right? I love Superman to me he's the real definition of what a superhero is supposed to be, and yea I admit he's sometimes overpowered but nevertheless an awesome character, he's in my top 5 superheroes list, possibly in my top 3

@flashkings: Yeah, he's a great character and him being actually "overpowered" is a misconception based off Pre-Crisis Superman or Reeve's take, which is the most comic book accurate.

I like his morals, origin and stories but I do prefer a few heroes to him though. He's in my top 10 for sure.

Superman started the genre. I'd say Tarzan and Zorro, despite being pulp heroes, are also important because they inspired the superhero genre.

  1. Superman, literally Jesus Christ-level iconic status and was the granddaddy of everyone here. He's the LOTR to the superhero genre and arguably the face of Detective Comics.
  2. Wonder Woman, arguably the greatest female figure in fiction.
  3. Spider-Man, arguably the most popular character in all of fiction and arguably the face of Marvel.
  4. Batman, arguably the most popular character in all of fiction and arguably the face of Detective Comics. Balanced by the other members of the trinity.
  5. Hulk, arguably the face of Marvel and when you mention "super strength" almost everyone thinks of Hulk.
  6. Joker, arguably the most popular and iconic villain of all time.
  7. Iron Man, who got played by RDJ for a decade.

Don't know the Phantom but this is how I'd rank the above. Iron Man isn't even close to the rest of these guys overall, he shouldn't be here IMO.

Don't know the Phantom but this is how I'd rank the above.

The Phantom dates back to the 1930's, before Superman showed up on the scene. The Phantom is arguably the first "superhero" the way we know them today, with a skin-tight costume (inspired by Robin Hood), mask with no visible eyes, etc.

The father of superheroes of course. While he wasn't the first, it's obvious that his impact is what made every other superhero thrive. Without Superman, things in the comic world would NOT be ANYWHERE like they are now

Superman is arguably as popular today as he was 80+ years ago. Very few fictional characters stand the test of time. He is on the short list alongside Sherlock Holmes, Frankenstein, and Mickey Mouse. Fresh material for these characters has continuously appeared since their introduction.

Spider-Man was literally the Juggernaut that Marvel needed to be, well, Marvel. Superman was a huge factor in the industry in the forties, but he wasn't necessarily needed. Spider-Man gave us a definitive answer on what is the most well written character of all time (in my opinion). Oh, and I hate Superman because he's an inconsistent, generic, and boring piece of crap.

He currently may not be the most popular character in terms of sales, readership and so on but he is the symbol of Western comics altogether and that character is SUperman. He is the pivot of the superhero genre.

Probably Superman and Batman in terms of influence.

But Spiderman aged better as a character in my opinion.

Supes is the GOAT . 1st comics i read when I was a kid ( wish they didn't deteriorate and trashed) . Then spiderman for awhile. Kudos to Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster .
