After watching the new Broly movie, I realized that Frieza is an absolute cunt and one of the greatest villains ever. I just wanted to see what others think.
Who is the greatest Anime/Manga villain
I personally think Muerem and Pain are the best written villains in terms of character devolpment. As a pure villain through and through I think Aizen and Stain are really interesting and enticing villains with understandable motives.
Toguro, Pain, Cell, King Bradley, and Ulquiorra are my personal faves.
I'd say Stain but I don't think he's a villain, he's more of an anti-hero.
Meruem (Hunter x Hunter)
Izaya Orihara (Durarara)
Solf J. Kimblee (Full Metal Alchemist)
Gilgamesh (Fate/)
Shogo Makishima (Psycho Pass)
---
Hard to kill villains or main antagonists, who appear to be significantly stronger than the hero, and who are present throughout the whole story:
Ayanami / Verloren ( 07 Ghost )
Naraku ( Inuyasha )
Chaos ( Sailor Moon )
Esdeath ( Akame ga kill !)
Hao Asakura ( Shaman King )
Blackbeard ( One Piece )
Wretched Egg ( Deadman Wonderland )
---
Well written villains, with non-trivial or unusual / unexpected motivations for being 'evil', who are also present for longer than only one or two story arcs:
Obito Uchiha ( Naruto )
Raoh ( Fist of the North Star )
Zeref ( Fairy Tail )
Light Yagami ( Death Note )
Char Aznable ( Mobile Suit Gundam )
Sosuke Aizen ( Bleach )
Gilgamesh ( Fate / Stay Night )
---
Other villains who typically dominate the plot of a story only for one or two story arcs, but are still well-written and/or unexpectedly much more powerful than the protagonists (at least at the time they were introduced):
Meruem ( Hunter x Hunter )
Shinobu Sensui ( Yu Yu Hakusho )
Zamasu / Goku Black ( Dragon Ball Super )
Acnologia ( Fairy Tail )
Kaguya ( Naruto )
Gemini Saga 'The Pope' ( Saint Seiya )
Hellmaster Phibrizzio ( Slayers )
---
Who I consider the 'greatest' of them all, changes all the time, and over time, but for now it's
AYANAMI - The massively overpowered 'God of Death' from the ' 07 Ghost ' manga.
A lot of villains end up being redeemed, so considering the irredeemable, I'd say Aizen is among the greatest.
@ultimatesage: meh I'd put Madara on like a misguided anti-hero list rather than a villain list, just being an antagonist doesn't really make you a villain.
@lawcol: I wouldn't call Lelouch a villain.
@notcensored: I know, but an antagonist is the villian for the protagonist, so yeah.:/
Plus madara's badass.
Meruem by a mile.

Greatest like strongest? Best written? Most enjoyable to watch?
This, some specification would be good!

In what way are Char's motivation unusual? His motivation is just good old fashion revenge against Zabi family for assassinating his father
Yami Bakura/ Zorc Necrophades.
The motivation for Char's behavior isn't revealed to the audience until very late in the Anime series.
Until then, the audience is left to believe that Char is just another one of Zabi-Zeon's loyal & powerful underlings.
So I think it was unexpected when Char's true + hidden goal of vanquishing the Zabi family (instead of serving them as a loyal underling) was eventually revealed, very late in the show.
Contrast Char Aznable with countless other (not as well-written) villains , who simply appear out of nowhere, then announce their trivial 'evil' goals right at that time they are introduced, and thus take away any sort of suspense and emotional concern (for the villain himself) from the audience.

Oh, right. I watched the The Origin prequel movies first, so I guess my perspective on Char's character is different
