Zod. Zod had a noble goal of reviving his people while Hela just wanted to conquer the universe and had no problem killing all Asguardians. If circumstances were different Zod would have allowed Kal to rule the new Krypton alongside him.

Zod

Michael Shannon played him perfectly and his tragic, sympathetic characterization was great. I also liked Hela well enough, but she didn't really do anything, if you know what I mean. I don't even recall her and Thor talking as siblings. She just had this singular, narrow goal and wasn't fleshed out beyond that scope.

Zod by a mile. He's one of my all time favorite CBM villains. I don't think I'd put Hela in my top 15.

Zod by a mile. He's played by one of my favorite actors, and even though Shannon didn't have much material to work with, I liked his characterization as a nationalist extremist who loved his people, for the most part. Helps that he had a cool visual with the armor, and some of the best damn fight scenes in a CBM. "I will find him!" is also wonderfully memetic.

Hela on the other hand was just meh. Blanchett obviously was having fun being hammy, but it's literally the same subplot as Loki's: shameful member of Odin's family wants revenge against Asgard. Her motivations weren't terribly original. She existed solely as a plot device to destroy Mjolnir and send Thor/Loki to Sakaar. I guess it doesn't help that I don't really care for Ragnarok as a movie either.

Y'know what's funny? I actually made a joke years ago about how Thor finds out he has a long-lost sister as a cheap way of giving him character motivation.

I’ll go with Zod. I love how radical he was and Michael Shannon did a phenomenal job.

Also, the monologue before fighting Clark was legendary.

Zod. Hela didn't really do anything for me. I like her personality but it was already something we've seen before. I feel like Loki had already played this role. Plus her just summoning weapons was boring.

Michael Shannon's General Zod was incredible.

Like Josh Brolin's Thanos he has such a gravitas to his performance.

Ignoring my bias to Clark and Barry overall, Zod was easily one of, if not the, best DCEU character written, not to mention a villain easily on par with the likes of MCU's best (Thanos was better, but that's honestly about it unless Kilgrave lives up to the hype I've seen people give him) which Hela isn't a part of. Zod takes this in a landslide.

Zod was better.

Hela has my favorite costume design out of any comic villain, and I loved how much fun Blanchett was having with role. She was clearly a force to be reckoned with and her sword conjuring abilities were so visually appealing. Not to mention the sound design was well done for that as well.

Pretty much everything else goes to Zod.

I could write a college essay on Zod and easily get a B-. Zod was taking a generic megalomaniac and making him into a layer complex villain. Zod is a character straight out of a Greek Tragedy

Hela...because I’m biased.

Also she had a lot more screen time, and was an actual threat to the protagonist.

Such a shame that every DCEU villian after him ended being as bad and sometimes worse than most MCU villians.

Zod felt much deeper. However, Hela seemed more irreplaceable as a villain.

Yep, Zod. This isn’t even a little close either. Cate is a great actress, but her performance as Hela was pretty forgettable. She looked fantastic, but other than that there was nothing there.

@theamazingspidey: I agree Zod was a superior villain and character, but that's a big extreme, isn't it? Ragnarok had its problems, but I Hela's character was well acted imo (even if one-dimensional)

Honestly most of my problems with Hela stem not from the performance (Blanchett was fine), I just find her B-plot so boring. Especially considering everything with Thor, Hulk, Valkyrie, Loki and The Grandmaster is so much fun!

Hela is a generic villain who did nothing significant. She was a plot device that appeared out of nowhere and then was killed off, pushed into oblivion.

Michael Shannon's Zod on the other hand is one of the best CBM villains. He had conviction in his dialogue delivery, pain and determination in his voice and body language and his character affected the character progression of the titular hero in a very significant way.

Seriously this is not even a fair comparison. Zod curbstomps in every way possible

Michael Shannon's Zod was amazing his strategy, choices were not forced for the sake of the plot. He was determined and you could feel the pain in his voice.
