Which is more impressive? Pulling a planet or destroying a planet.

I suppose pulling.

After all, Frieza can destroy a planet, but he arguably couldn't pull one.

With some rope I could pull a boulder of not-insignificant size. No way am I punching it though. Answer: destroying.

Depends on how you do either one.
Destroying a planet with someone else's tech isn't much a feat and if you pull a planet with some kind of space two truck it's not really that impressive.

Hmm..I'd say pull in terms of physical strength, but destroying a planet would probably mean they have more versatility. I don't know it's pretty even to me.

But you don't have super strength.....suppose you did you could fling said boulder into space as easily as you could punch it into dust...

I don't have super strength, I have normal strength. I was using my own strength level as a ratio to determine which action is more challenging for an object of identical weight. To Superman, the boulder is Saturn. If his strength works the same as mine, merely at a higher threshold, then he should be able to pull Saturn much more easily than he can crack it in half with a punch.

destroying. pulling a planet is not really really about strenght, but more of propulsion, aka flight. so when they make characters pull a planet just to make them seem strong, it's pretty pointless, since it's their propulsion that's doing most of the work. when you destroy a planet, it's about power you have, either physical, energy or anything else

I'll have to say destroying a planet would be more powerful and would take more strength ( if doing it with your hands. ) even with super powers I will say destroying is more impressive. Pulling a Planet is just a strength feat.

Moving a planet anywhere in a relatively short period of time without completely devastating its crust should be pretty much impossible.

Destroying a planet by standing on it and punching really hard with a human sized fist should also be pretty much impossible.

So for guys like Hulk and Superman, physics are so far out the window it is kind of arbitrary.

But as far as real world physics go, it seems pretty well established that destroying the earth would require something like 10^31 joules of energy (absolute minimum, so anything other than an ideal situation would actually require more). I think the amount of energy needed to move the planet will depend on how far and how fast you are moving it.

According to some I can destroy a planet by buying a SUV, now pulling one out of orbit... that takes talent.

Hmm..interesting. I look at it this way. We've all seen the Met Rx competitions where dudes pull airplanes and train cars.

Now imagine them destroying those vehicles with 2, 3, even 4 punches. I know comic physics is different than real world physics but I'm just sayin'...

Destroying a friggn planet. The deathstar could problably pull a planet easier than blowing one up. More energy needed to power dat lazer.

I believe in avoiding waste so better to eat a planet than to destroy a planet and use the poop as fertilizer. DC also has more powerful sun eaters from the Controllers and also Starbreaker. Superman is also sort of a sun eater altho I am not sure if Superman can eat 12 stars in one sitting.

There are tons of ways to destroy a planet, but very few to pull one.

@GodDamnIronMan:

LOL. Funny. But driving a car doesn't really require any effort on my part. Destroying it would, depending on how I total it.

Now, if I'm wasted and stupidly decide to get behind the wheel, I can accomplish both the driving of and destruction of the vehicle in one fell swoop. LOL.

I just drawing a simple assumption. It's the same actually, It's easier for you to push a car, I bet you tried before...but we can't destroy the car...

seeing this topic, just sharing my knowedge:

  • Energy required to destroy earth ~= 2 x 10^31 J
  • Mass of earth = 6 x 10^24 kg
  • So, it depends upon speed of pulling/pushing the planet. If the planet is being pulled at relativistic speeds , like 100,000,000 m/s , the energy reqd ~ = 10^36 J (around destroyng jupiter)
  • If you move it at lower speeds like HYPERSONIC speeds, then the energy comes out to be around ~= 10^30 J (can't destroy earth)
  • If you move it at around sound speeds, then the energy reqd = ~10^29 J (barely destroy moon)

On the other hand, if we compare it to moving it in , say sun's gravity, like moving earth, then, someone who can destroy earth can:

  • Move earth to about a few million km with the same energy
  • Move saturn to about a few million km with same energy
  • Move Jupiter to about a few hundred thousand km with the same energy
  • Lift the weight equivalent to solar system with the same energy

Easily destroying a planet.

I can pick up and move a large chunk of rock, "pull", however I cannot destroy that rock.

@nite_nite: Logic is flawed. The "chunk of rock" isn't fighting you to stay in place, there is no ground in space for you to pull from unless you were on a separate terrestrial body that wouldn't just pull/or be pulled by said planet. Also a 1 inch 50 pound ball is much easier to pull than 50 foot 1 pound ball, provided you don't have a decently sized lasso... but tools would invalidate the question at hand. *shrugs*

@project_worm: obviously this is assuming one can freely maneuver through space. If a being was the size relative to earth that a man is to a rock. He'd move the earth with his hand just the same.

However the rock doesn't have to fight me to stay in place. I can move it. But not destroy it. The question was whether or not destroying a planet is more impressive than pulling "moving" one. I used something much much more smaller scale to answer it.

-btw if Gravity is what you mean by a pla-- nvm

@nite_nite: The part about limited maneuverability I used to suggest that in order to move the planet you'd need more than just pure strength, you'd need an ability of self propulsion.

Also like you said you'd need to be absolutely massive in addition to super strength in order to accomplish the feat in the same way you'd move any other rock.

If you have enough telekinetic power to pull a planet you should have more than enough to rip it apart.

@project_worm: Oma simplify this. The scenario posted is referring to let's say average adult male(in my case) and asking what's more impressive; destroying or moving a planet? W/o assumed ability to maneuver through space? Then those that mean that he instantly dies from lack of oxygen and the environment of space as well? If a normal man could survive those circumstances and have strength to move a planet then yes that's impressive. If those circumstances would kill him then it ends in stalemate as destroying a planet will also kill him via destruction or the vacuum of space.

^^^thats why I kept it simple and assumed he could maneuver himself in order to pull said planet. Which still wouldn't be as impressive as destroying said planet. I can push a car, can't destroy one though. I'm just using smaller scale objects to make it simple

@nite_nite: I get what you were suggesting and I tend to agree, I was only pointing out that for moving a planet you'd need more than raw power. You don't need to survive destroying the planet in order to succeed in destroying it.

@project_worm: oh okay. Well not worrying about survival then… its having enough raw power(energy i.e. Kinetic etc) to destroy a planet or being able to survive the vacuum of space as well as maneuver through and pull a planet.

The latter has more requirements to meet and meeting them is impressive, but the sheer power it'd take to destroy a planet>

This brings Gold Freeza/Vegeta situation to mind even tho it's not a battle

Agreed. Creating earth >= benching an entire galaxy
