Poll Which genre would you class The Dark Knight as? (47 votes)

Superhero 40%
Crime 26%
Action 11%
Thriller 23%

Whilst it has elements of all the genres above, if you had to associate it with one genre, what would it be and why?

Superhero pretty obviously, with Thriller as the secondary genre.

Superhero. No matter how much you change it as a more thrilling and realsitic CBM, it's is still a fictional universe that sets apart from realism.

Yeah, it might have elements from all of the above but it is primarily a superhero movie.

What Magian and ANTHP2000 said! It's above all and primarily Superhero movie, the second options of genre are not required since Superhero Movies/Comics can take many elements over.

I don't get the meaning behind this thread. The film has elements of all the above, just like many CBMs have elements of romance, drama and thriller. This cannot change the fact that they are superhero movies. It's a story of the Batman.

Crime because of its focus on showing the escalation that comes while combating crime.

I think superhero movies should be judged as crime, drama, action, adventure, fantasy, thriller, science fiction, etc.

They should be able to compete with other films in their genre.

I think Spider-man 2 is one of the best action films of all time.

This. Super hero is pretty much just a term Like shonen . A shonen anime or super hero movie can be featured in a lot of genres

Difference is is unlike those CBM's, their elements don't surpass their superhero genre, whereas with TDK, whilst it's still a superhero film, the action, crime and thriller sides of it play a massive role in it that you forget it's a superhero film.

If I had to narrow it down to one, I'd say thriller.

And yes, superhero is a genre.

Horror when joker is on screen, action when batman is, and crime when anybody else is. When Batman and Joker are together, definitely thriller. That's the sign of a great movie, one that has the film match it's characters, not the characters match the film. (An example would be putting Punisher in a show like the runaways. The show would not then turn into TV-MA violence with an adult plot. It would stay a teen drama and Frank would be censored in both violence and plot.)

TDK sets in a fictional universe that resonates with the world-building of comic characters therefore it might have elements/tropes crime/thriller but in the end, it falls under a CBM. The superhero genre has all of it under the radar.

It's a Superhero movie. An excellent one, which brilliantly blends in aspects of the crime thriller genre, but a Superhero movie nonetheless.

Not that it is a definitive source, but if you go to http://imdb.com/feature/genre/ the page title is “popular TV show and movie genres”. There are 15 genres listed and “Superhero” is among them.

The Dark Knight is a superhero movie first and foremost furthermore there is nothing wrong with it being one. Despite what a few notable directors might say, I believe we are past the days of comic book movies having a stigma as seen by the general audience.

It has a guy who dresses up as a bat and goes around a city in a mini tank after a guy with clown makeup.

This does not make the movie bad or stupid, but it only shows the movie is a superhero movie first.

@dmnb2wavy: I would call it a martial arts anime, but I would accept someone saying it’s a superhero anime since the principle characters have what equates to superpowers and unique costumes. My original point was that “Superhero” is a distinct genre. Obviously, movies can identify with multiple genres, but usually there is one primary genre followed by several sub genres that also apply. Traditionally, “superhero” is a sub genre to “fantasy” which include anything from Star Wars to Being John Malkovich.

But it is ridiculous, like a superhero. It's presented very well, but at rhe end of the day it's ridiculous like a superhero movie.

And I'm not saying this to diss the movie.

Oh you think it is. May I know what your arguments are ? Because with Thor or Aquaman you have Fantasy movies, with The Gardians of the Galaxy or Green Lantern you have Sci-Fi movies, with Spider-Man or Shazam! you have comedy movies, with Captain America you have war movies, with Batman or Daredevil you have Noir/Gangster movies, ... How can Superhero really be genre in itself ?

Because most superhero films have the same goal - good defeating evil. All those films you've listed have some elements of different genres in them, that's correct, but they all share the same goal of the good guy beating the bad guy.

Ideed, but defeating the bad guy is not the specificity of a super-hero movies ! Look at all James Bond movies, or Mission Impossible movies, or Die Hard movies, or ... too many to name.

It's impossible for a movie to have one genre.

For TDK it's Thriller-Crime

@vishop_: but the source you’re showing is unreliable because even I can go on that same page and write down “superhero is not a genre”. You define what genre it is by breaking down what tropes it follows. A character doesn’t define a genre, the film itself does. The Dark Knight, Logan, Man of Steel, Ragnarok & SHAZAM! Are all films about a superhero but they’re definitely not in the same genre.
