Poll What's most important to you in CBM? (91 votes)

True to source material and character likeness/faithness 31%
Mind blowing action scenes and exciting feats 27%
Excellent story-telling even if it is at expense of source materials/characters 71%
Other? 8%

Imagine a major hollywood studio is going to make your all-time favourite comic book into a live action movie, the director and producer somehow approach you and promise you that they can guarantee you ONE THING AND ONE THING ONLY in the upcoming film, which of those elements is the most important to you? A true faithful adaptation stick close to the source material and characters? Fantastic action and feats? Or creative new story that might be deviant far from the actual comic and bear very little character-likeness? Or else?

Feel free to share what is your favourite comic book too, or the comic you wish to be adapted the most ?

While I definitely wouldn't mind it if it's faithful to its source material, it's not like it's a deal breaker or anything. I'd rather watch something well written even if it has taken several liberties. Of course I'm not saying that the action scenes aren't important, just that they are not as important.

They’re all important. I love the Hulk. But if someone made an Infinity War Level movie of him that strayed away from his whole character, I don’t think I would enjoy it. But at the same time, if they made a good fight scene with, say, Thor and Loki, then I would like that. But the writing matters most.

I concider CBM films to be there own timeline, so it's not very important if the heroes differ from the comics.

But CBM should still try to be good movies. And for that they need good stories.

@magian: I agree, most of my top favourite CBM took creative departure from their comic book counterparts eg. TDK, Civil War, Days of Future Past etc., nothing like the source materials but brilliant in their own way

@cocacolaman: in that case, what do you think of Ang Lee's Hulk? That movie have received plenty of fan backlash for the dispiction of hulk.

FEATS.

This is objectively the correct answer. NEVER go to a movie unless it has city block level+ feats ?

Tell a good story above all else. Then give me some mind blowing action and feats while remaining at least somewhat faithful to the character. That's the order I'd rank importance.

Depends, for some characters, different things will matter differently to me, for Aquaman, I've had a shirt since middle school of him riding a giant seahorse, so seeing on the big screen just that one thing that I've been waiting over a decade to see was basically all I could've wanted

Like if Arrow had him grow a van dyke and go on a politically motivated speech about socialism would've been awesome

In short, there's some things about characters it's much better to not change

@limitless82: I think that the overall plot of the movie is meh, but it’s got good action and shows off the power of Hulk well.

Storytelling and it will always be at the expense of some level of comic accuracy. You can’t fit 60 years of backstory into a 2 hour movie. Paraphrasing and replacing the more complicated parts is just common sense.

But yeah, Stroytelling is always first, last, and everything in between.

@jb681131: yeah that's how I try to see it too. That's why although I prefer the classic spiderman and not keen with how MCU is making spiderman into Ironman junior in the new movies, I view this intereptation as alternative timeline/version and just roll with it.

Hm.. It isn't really cut and dried I guess. My favorites have it all - Watchmen and Sin City are by the book adaptation, but Logan, First Class and GotG are all extremely liberal when it comes to source material.

I guess I want them be as close to the spirit of the source material as possible, but it can work otherwise.

Action is a completely separate category.

@cocacolaman: I liked the story actually, mainly the father/son conflict dylamic overall action was good too for its time period although the final battle scene was pretty lame imo

@limitless82: Lighter but only because it's easier to make a good CBM like that. There's not many CBMs that pulled off darker tone while remaining a good and enjoyable movie. The only ones I can think of that managed this are The Dark Knight and Logan. Keep in mind I'm only talking about DC and Marvel movies here.

First place is the action. Without action the story and all that will be worthless.

Second is storytelling

Fourth is the source material

@mrnoital: what kind movie adaptation change on your favourite comic character will piss you off the most?

changes don't really piss me off, I like the multiverse theory and I like to see different interpretations, I just like to see good references

but I think it's at least best to keep the spirit of the character the same, and if you don't keep anything about them the same then I wonder what the point of adapting that character was

All three because I remembered that Super Mario Bros movie.

@gaoron: I was going to say Days of Future Past was pretty dark too but it's Fox lol. Hmm do you class Ragnork as dark or light? It got tons of humour, yet there are so much death in there end with destruction of asgard, pretty bleak for CBM standard.

@supermanforever: in your opinion, which CBM had Best Action?

Id say Infinity war has the best action. Alot of really nice fights etc.

Man of steel had good action

Thor ragnarok was very good

The dark knight rises

spider man 2 was really good (og)

@supermanforever: yeah I agree, I will add Civil War to the mix too. What would you say is your favourite action/fight scene? For me, the best action scene was the bat tumbler chase scene in the mid-section of Dark Knight, and best fight scene would be the titan fight in Infinity war.

All three, but I DO think it''s important to be faithful to certain aspects of the source material that I hold dear or think are really important.
