.hack//sign or Log Horizon. Log has the better characters but the story is up and down. As a life-long MMOer, there's also a lot of exposition for people who aren't familiar with MMOs that I personally could do without. .hack//sign is a very slow anime by contrast and some of the characters are bland but its a pretty good journey. Especially if you watch all the series (though they aren't as good)
