The magazine it's published in determines the demographics not genre, shonen isn't a genre but relates to targeted demographic. Shonen in Japanese literally means boy.
"what most defines whether or not a series is shōnen are things like the magazine it is serialized in"
Not exactly true, as what makes a shonen what it is largely has to do with the target audience, and Assassination Classroom definitely doesn't fit that definition.
These would be my Top-5 combining both manga and anime versions.
- Gintama (equal parts anime and manga)
- One Piece (equal parts anime and manga, slight edge to manga)
- Fullmetal Alchemist (mostly anime since I'm incomplete on the manga)
- One Punch Man (mostly manga, since there's currently only one season of anime)
- Beelzebub (mostly manga, anime was good but manga is far funnier)
Is Gintama really this good ? I want to give it a try soon.
I think so, but it's not like many of the other shounens. Most episodes/chapters are stand-alone stories, it's a comedy which often breaks the 4th wall by referencing other shounens and the main protagonist likes to monologue melodramatically during the climax of a story arc. The first two episodes are a vertical slice of everything going forward, but the story begins with episode three. I can't recall if the manga starts that way, too. The manga's visual gags are funnier, but I found the verbal jokes better in the anime. Having said that I have always ONLY watched the anime subbed. I cannot say how good or how poor the dub is. Dubs tend to skew my opinion of a show to the negative, so I avoid them.
