It is, it's published in Weekly Shonen Jump.

@bandedessinee: The magazine it's published in doesn't necessarily determine it's genre.

The magazine it's published in determines the demographics not genre, shonen isn't a genre but relates to targeted demographic. Shonen in Japanese literally means boy.

Not exactly true, as what makes a shonen what it is largely has to do with the target audience, and Assassination Classroom definitely doesn't fit that definition.

@valorknight: Anyone can read and watch Assassination Classroom but the main target audience are Japanese boys and teens.

I'd disagree, it's targeted towards a much more mature audience than that.

@valorknight: Why because it has talk about killing or fanservice with Irina? You can find that in almost all shonen anime.

Animal Land and Zatch Bell, what Raiku lack and conventional art skills, he more then make up for in an engaging reading experience.

Soul Eater is pretty cool too.

These would be my Top-5 combining both manga and anime versions.

  1. Gintama (equal parts anime and manga)
  2. One Piece (equal parts anime and manga, slight edge to manga)
  3. Fullmetal Alchemist (mostly anime since I'm incomplete on the manga)
  4. One Punch Man (mostly manga, since there's currently only one season of anime)
  5. Beelzebub (mostly manga, anime was good but manga is far funnier)

List of anime/manga I have watched/read is fairly small. But I liked Deathnote better than the rest. So I guess it was really interesting and it can entertain you more than once.

@Penguin-Dust:

I think so, but it's not like many of the other shounens. Most episodes/chapters are stand-alone stories, it's a comedy which often breaks the 4th wall by referencing other shounens and the main protagonist likes to monologue melodramatically during the climax of a story arc. The first two episodes are a vertical slice of everything going forward, but the story begins with episode three. I can't recall if the manga starts that way, too. The manga's visual gags are funnier, but I found the verbal jokes better in the anime. Having said that I have always ONLY watched the anime subbed. I cannot say how good or how poor the dub is. Dubs tend to skew my opinion of a show to the negative, so I avoid them.
