WHAT COMIC HAS AGED THE BEST FOR YOU AND COULD BE READ TODAY?

I'm looking for some classics to read up on but I find sometimes that either the concept, the art or just the slang or language used can be really jarring at times and hard to get into.

Rules:

-It has to be AT LEAST 14 years old.

-Try not to let nostalgia cloud your judgement.

-Try to give a reason why.

For me the best choice is The Sandman by Neil Gaiman.

Wolverine, the first full run that started in 1988. The stories are still compelling even after all these years and the artwork would stand up to anything being put out today. I jumped on that bandwagon in the mid 90's and have never gotten off. I particularly like the period where Larry Hama was writing and Adam Kubert was doing the art.

Walter Simonson's run of Thor. I am loving the introduction of Beta Ray Bill and the role he ends up playing in the comics. They are very good reads.

The original run of Eternal Warrior (1992) was amazing as well. The colors from that period of Valiant were brighter and more lively than most of their contemporaries. The story of Gilad Ani Padda is always fun to read as well. He is a super hero without so many of the super hero hang ups. He does enjoy fighting and killing, but he is definitely the good guy. He has lived since the dawn of civilization and that gives him the feeling of an old man in an young man's body. In many ways he reminds me of Wolverine, in that he cannot be killed by any normal means and fights as such. Again, as an unconventional super hero he does not face the normal scenarios that we are all so familiar with in the DC and Marvel super hero books, so there is a refreshing feel when reading the stories.

Some people may hate this but aside from AOA and V4V, I say JLA: The Nail.

I'd say Judge Dredd, since it's practically the only well-known comic book in which all of the characters age normally.

I dunno if I have the best comic book knowledge to provide a great answer but here is my opinion:

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

Batman: Year One

V for Vendetta

Sandman

Watchmen

Maus - if your into that

Death of Superman

and finally, in my opinion the best joker story ever told: The Killing Joke

Moore's Swamp Thing. Good writing is good writing. Probably saved Swamp Thing as a title.

Miller's Daredevil...It's who DD still is..(I'd even argue in Waid's run.)

Englehart/Rogers Detective Comics..We all love BTAS (which has also aged well) and this was the forerunner of it.

Dark Phoenix Saga...Still X-Men's greatest fight, and really defined Wolverine.

Great Darkness Saga (LSH)..Resurrected Darkseid back to his proper place. Before this story line, he'd almost been forgotten.

Manhunter: (Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson) over shadowed Batman in his own book! (Detective). The Manhunter (Paul Kirk) reminds me of how they characterized Batman in "Batman Begins"

Alan Moore's Swamp Thing. read it now.

It has aged fairly well. There are a few pop culture references here and there that haven't aged spectacularly, and the art is a little outdated, but the stories themselves are still as relevent as ever.

@squares: Personally I still love the art. Rite of Spring in particular is ageless as far as I'm concerned.

Judge Dredd has definitely aged very, very well, apart from maybe the first volume worth of stories.

In general I would say a lot of Fleetway comics have aged better than DC and Marvel, it helps that a lot of people like Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, and Peter Milligan were writing for them before moving to US comics.

---------------------------------------------

I think Captain Britain - Crooked World has aged much better than the likes of Crisis and The Great Darkness Saga.

A lot of Stan Lee Spider-Man has aged very well, so long as you read it as taking part in the late 60s, early 70s (lots of slang)

Claremont/Byrne, Claremont/Smith, and Claremont/Adams X-Men.

The Great Darkness Saga. Read it.

This. Not enough folks have. To this day, it may be the best at taking all 20 or so Legionaires (sp?) and making them all relevant in a 5 part story. Most story lines have trouble juggling 5 characters in say, a JLA or Avengers arc.

It also has one of the greatest villain reveals in comics.

Mike Grell's work on Green Arrow

The Michellinie/McFarlane run on Spider-Man is still pretty good imo

Year One, although Dark City and Savage City are better

Batman: Year One comes to mind. All the elements used in that story still hold very true to the character and mythos.
