What anime character has the saddest backstory

Seemingly if you want to be an anime character, you have to have a sad backstory which includes having no parents. However there are some anime characters whose backstories stand out as being incredibly sad. Gaara, Guts, Sasuke, all of these characters have backstories that will make you cry. However what anime character has the most heart breaking backstory.

This thread reminded that somehow the 4kids one piece dub made Zoro’s backstory as a kid brutal. Kuina tripped down the stairs and died in the original but 4kids had her beat to the point of being crippled and could never fight again. The hell?

Anyway, Brook in One Piece is pretty sad for me.

One of the things that bugged me the most about Sasuke was when, while fighting a Gaara who was actively trying to talk him down at the Kage Summit, he told him "You don't understand my hatred!"

Like. Dude? Gaara's life is much worse than what you've been through. At the very least in the same ballpark. Nobody in this series has more reason to hate than Gaara.

In no particular order:

Gaara, his story hit me like a truck when I first saw it. Yeah there was plenty of sadness in Naruto beforehand, but nothing like this. I mean, Naruto's life was sad, yeah, but he had some people that gave a damn about him in the form of Iruka, Hiruzen, Hinata, Shikamaru(possibly Choji too), as well as the Ramen Guy and his daughter. Gaara didn't have shit and then some.

The Elric Brothers obviously have a pretty sad past, I mean they lost both of their parents and when they tried to bring one back they literally lost parts of themselves, in Al's case his whole body. They are strong and use it as an anchor for their determination but it was still very traumatizing for them.

Nagato's childhood was so bad that at one point Orochimaru wanted to kill him out of mercy to his suffering as an orphan. Later one of his best friends is killed on his own kunai and then shortly after an attempt is made on his own life by other shinobi, simply because they wanted to help people lead lives that weren't completely shitty and ravaged by war.

Eren Jaeger and Mikasa Ackerman. Eren literally sees his mother eaten right in front of him and then basically ends up joining the military just to survive(and for vengeance of course). Mikasa's parents were brutally murdered right in front of her and she nearly sold into slavery before Eren saved her. Then her foster mother is eaten right in front of her and she also ends up joining the military to survive, and to protect the one she cares about more than anything else, including herself. Sadly for her, he's pretty much oblivious to how much she cares for him, and if he's not then he pretty much cares more about vengeance than how she feels.

These are just a few, they're likely not the saddest in anime but they are pretty damn sad regardless imo.

Ken Kaneki has gone through some shit

I'm a sucker for endangered animals. So I guess that helped with the reason why I think Chopper, from One Piece, has the saddest backstory I've ever seen. It always brought me down seeing how the villagers treated him because he was a different kind of animal than others and the whole relationship he had with the doctor almost had me in tears.

why people forget about Guts

Alucard got raped for years as a child, I haven’t read any sadder than that though Seras’ backstory comes close.

Because Sasuke was full of himself for the whole series. Also IDK if he really knew about Gaara's childhood.

Kenshin, Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal choked me up a bit at the end.

And the Elric brothers

Guts was the most messed up I've seen. Chopper was saddest I can think of

I'm not much of an anime fan, but Gut's backstory was outright f***** up. Kakashi's too though not nearly as drastic.

No Itachi so far. That's suprising.

Ganta's backstory/story is still very depressing and disturbing, especially for a boy his age.

@socajunkie: Guts(Berserk) born from the lynched body of dead prostitute, was then adopted by leader of a mercenary group, who then raped him too, until be killed the leader and because a warrior. Evetually he finds a new family of mercs too. Becomes bestfriends with the leader, years later the leader turns on the entire crew, Joins demons, him and the demons kill EVERYBODY, Guts his held down and forced to watch his former bestfriend rape his (Guts') girlfriend, until he chops his own arm off in order to save her

Kaneki. His life is the textbook definition of suffering

Guts , he had to become a man at a young age, got raped, tortured, alone, and now he has a mark that will make him struggle his entire life.

Future Trunks' story was sad aswell. Not as sad as Guts' but definetly worth a mention.

Midora had a sad story, but not anything drastic.

Guts is number one from what I seen/read for sure.

Others that are up there for me are Trafalgar Law, Nico Robin, Vinsmoke Sanji and Thorfinn (Vinland Saga)

Guts for sure, struggling against fate from birth is pretty messed up. Like what he was born from the corpse of his dead mom hanging from a tree

Not THE saddest but I think Elizabeth and Meliodas deserve a mention.

Literally never happened lmao. Gaara has siblings who loves him. It was Gaara who told Sasuke to give up on revenge and darkness. All Sasuke says in reply is that he has nothing left but revenge
