Wasn't what AOU Vision said blasphemous?

They asked him what he was and he said "I AM"

Now I'm not a Christian but isn't that one of God's names? It shocked me that Christians didn't have a problem with this because they are very vocal when it comes to things like that.

Any Christians on Vine caught that?

It was like him saying i am what i am. Nothing really made me think he was thinking of himself as god.

so every religious person out there should feel offended whenever someone or something uses that phrase (which is merely just a english translation of an older word) as an answer then ?

geez, people like that should be not allowed to have a religion at all.

I'm Christian and have no problem with it, Vision wasn't trying to say he is God. Just that he exists independent of Jarvis, Stark and ultron. Vision wasn't saying that his name is "I am".

@kyrees: I never said that read the OP. I said I'm surprised that the Christian community didn't respond to it because they usually do to things like that. And at the end I asked if any of the Christian viners caught the reference. You get it now?

@kfabz-23: i do get the reference but the point of my post was why should christians be offended on such a small thing ? i am being sarcastic in that remark because you seem to think christians should be reacting to it in any way possible except for not caring to it.

Yes what he said could technically be considered blasphemy. In the Hebrew culture declaring I AM was considered blasphemy because God had used I AM as a personal name for himself in Exodus 3:14. So in the New Testament when Jesus declared that he was I AM he was saying that he was God and the religious leaders clear understood that and tried to stone him(John 8:56-59). So from a Christian perspective when Vision says I AM it is the same as if he had said that he was God. I was slightly surprised when he said it but I wasn't personally offended but I am sure that there are those who would be. But this all depends on what the director meant by the line we can't be sure he meant it as a religious statement. I hope this helps answer your question sorry if I sound a little preachy.

@jayc1324: I love how people will see Avengers and realize it's a made-up story meant to entertain and teach people about good triumphing over evil and the power of teamwork.

Then those same people read the Bible and think it's all totally real.

Also, Thor literally calls himself a God. How is that not more blasphemous? If you're worried about this stuff you probably aren't seeing Marvel movies in theatres.

@overmonitor: thor has never referred to himself as a god in the MCU. Loki has, and others have called Thor a god, but there is a difference between being a god, and being God. Same thing in comics. There are gods in comics but God is an entirely different thing.

@kyrees: Man of Steel, Exodus & Noah. I don't know why Exodus and Noah got negative responses. But I know some people were angry about Jesus imagery in MOS.

MoS practically spouts kal as "god among men" while noah is different retelling of the story of the ark. i haven't watched exodus yet but if it's the same as noah, there's nothing different then

all of them are blown up versions compared to AoU vision's phrase which is so mundane it's not even funny.

@_mongul: I won't lie, this made me laugh out loud. Good one.

But really you can be theist, which means you can believe in God or a higher power, and still think the Bible is silly propoganda written by humans.

@kyrees: I won't talk on Exodus and Noah because of the stories they're based on. But the difference between the Man of Steel references and the Age of Ultron one reference is the fact that Vision used Gods name. Superman never directly say that he's God or implies it.

Jor-El says he would be a god among us and we see Superman with his arms out like Jesus on the cross which could've of been a coincidence, I doubt it but it could've. Vision simply quotes God by saying "I' Am".

But again that's not what the threads about.

I think it's more a reference to 'I think, therefore I am'. It's him establishing that he is his own, free-willed being.

To my memory, the only 'name' Judeo-Christian God has is Yaweh (spelling?).

AoU had plenty o Biblical references, but most were made by Ultron himself and none claimed to be God to my memory.

Huh, I forgot he actually said that. I am surprised that not many people in my circle made a big deal out of it, as I can see how the statement could be viewed as sacrilege. Anyhow, doesn't really bother me.

The reference could be taken that way. It could also be a reference to the quote, "I think, therefore I am."

If what you claim is true, then you're violating what atheism stands for. Atheism is the convinced disbelief in god, gods or anything in the nature of divinity. The closest thing to how you just described yourself is agnostic, which is quite different than atheism.
