According to MTV , Death Row records which was purchased for $18 million after going bankrupt this past January is now looking to comic books to expand their empire. This is interesting, simply because it really has never been done before.
WIDEawake, who now owns Death Row, plans to launch a new brand extension called Hustle City that will produce books, animated webisodes, games, and even a feature film using the legendary hip-hop label’s properties. At the top of their list is a graphic novel that will include a CD insert of story-related music. “Our goal is to continually breathe new life into Death Row,”
I can understand "breathing new life into Death Row," but a Death Row comic book? According to the company's founder, Lara Lavi, the graphic novel will contain a CD containing music tracks that would go along with the book. While the idea seems to me at least to be completely unconventional, it is nonetheless interesting. However, I can see it can also having pretty lousy sales. It seems to me at least, that unless you are a die hard fan of "Death Row Records," you may not necessarily run to your local comic book shop to pick this up. Hey, what do I know? I love Tupac, but I don't see myself picking this up unless they manage to get a solid creative team to back them up. What do you guys think? Do you think that this is just another way to cash in on Tupac's career?
