Title of the First Star Wars Stand-Alone Film Revealed, Release Date for Star Wars VIII

During a shareholder meeting today, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger delivered some news about a couple of future Star Wars films, according to StarWars.com.

The first stand-alone Star Wars film is Rogue One, which explores characters and events beyond the main characters of the Star Wars saga. The film will be directed by Gareth Edwards and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz. Felicity Jones has already been cast for the film. John Knoll, Jason McGatlin, and Simon Emanuel will executive-produce and Tony T and Kathleen Kennedy will produce the film. Shooting begins in London this summer and Rogue One will release on December 16th, 2016.

Iger also confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, set after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set to hit theaters on May 26th, 2017. Johnson is well-known for directing Looper.

If we had a film about Wedge forming Rogue Squadron with Tycho and the gang that would be so freaking cool!

Wonder Woman most definitely will have to move its released that. You have stars at the end of May and then you have Toy Story 3 a week or two after Wonder Woman. They will have to change that date pronto.

More Wedge is always awesome. I hope to see some Starfighter action. Unless they cast a young Luke i don't think i'll ever see the founding of Rogue Squadron onscreen.

@neghead: If Marvel can release 2-4 movies a year for the last 5-6 years(most of which have killed at the box office) I don't think 3 SW movies in a 2 year span will kill that franchise after 12 years without any.

Yes briefly but the X wing books fleshed him out to a greater extent then the movies. Unless there doing the first founding of rough squadron with luke.

So a movie that focuses on space battles, im thinking this is going to be like the Top Gun of the Starwars universe which sounds awesome

But IMPROVE upon Top Gun and don't make it all romance.

I hope it's about Wedge Antilles but I thought I read somewhere that the original actor wasn't interested in being in Episode VII. Not that a recast matters to much because I can't even remember what he looks like. Yub, yub Commander!
