Which one is better?
i walked out of TFA underwhelmed but happy. I walked out of TLJ embarrassed.
The writing is horrible and somehow the man who wrote it is getting a whole trilogy.
Left the theater after The Force Awakens excited for the future of Star Wars and counting down the days until VIII
Left the theater after The Last Jedi confused and totally underwhelmed, with no excitement for anything Star Wars whatsoever
This sums up exactly how I feel.
A great sequel should move the story forward in an interesting way and leave the characters in a completely different place. By the end of Empire, the heroes fall into a trap laid by Vader, Luke is devestated emotionally, it is revealed that Vader is his father, he loses an arm and lightsaber, and Han is frozen. In The Last Jedi, the characters are in the same place that they were at the end of The Force Awakens. It failed to progress the story or characters in a meaningful way. There's no reason to care for the next installment.

If you boiled the ocean and all that was left was salt, it still wouldn't be more than the amount of salt TLJ haters can produce from their eyes.
Force Awakens easily. It may have been a straight copy of A New Hope, but at least it was structured well, the action was a lot more fun, the characters were handled a little better, and set up a lot of interesting mysteries. Not to mention, Finn was a more interesting character, whom did jack all in The Last Jedi.
The Last Jedi was an overly long movie that ultimately ended up feeling empty with action and humor. It subverts expectations for the sake. You have the exact same questions at the end that you did at the end of The Force Awakens. It was really disappointing.
Bump.
TFA is hands down the worst film of the franchise as it's a remake that tries to brand itself as a sequel.
Aside from much better acting, cinematography, and dialogue. TLJ, flawed as it may be, is original.
Copies don't deserve to be compared to original work.

TFA. I left The Last Jedi hating the movie, and I still do, and it actually killed all of my excitement for Episode 9 I thought it was so bad.
TFA, I thought Kylo Ren was cool, but TLJ was absolute trash. Never thought I'd see a SW film worse than AotC. It actually has me debating whether I want to see Solo or not, and completely killed my excitement for the film.
Equally smelly in my opinion.
The choice isn't so clear for me. I do give more credit to TLJ for at least being more original and taking chances. Though this also hurt it, because it was pretty terrible story wise and many things didn't make sense. Makes you wonder if people would've liked a clone of the Empire Strikes Back better. On the other hand, TFA is almost A New Hope with Rey edition. Which left me so damn salty after watching it in the theater. These movies do have incredible visual effects, cgi, sound, etc. However, those are surface level things, and the movies lack depth. All this said, they mean nothing to me and Star Wars is dead. Won't be watching episode 9 until I'm able to watch it at home when someone else has bought it. Though, I will say that Rogue One was entertaining and decent.
Here's to the galaxy from long, long ago somehow imploding so there's no sequel trilogy in 5 years.
Remember that by the second movie of the trilogies both Anakin and Luke lost their arm and have experienced pain before (mentally, emotionally, and physically.) Mrs. Mary Sue who no one knows about doesn't have that!
TLJ is crap, it's not a debate, get over it.
TLJ is a steaming pile of shit that should be retconned out of existence due to the numerous plotholes and how they completely wasted some of their characters. It's like Johnson didn't even watch TFA (or almost any star wars movie) before writing TLJ. TFA is pretty meh, but it least it actually tried to continue with what Lucas started.
So yeah, I'd watch TFA over TLJ anyday. Despite TFA being lackluster
