The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Marvel Studios has tapped Matthew Firpo and Ryan Firpo to pen the script for The Eternals.

No further details were provided, but this latest piece of news does come in hot on the heels of Disney CEO Bob Iger telling shareholders last week that Marvel was looking to launch a new franchise relatively soon and while many assumed it would be a film based on The Eternals, nothing had been confirmed until now. The Eternals now joins the Untitled Spider-Man Sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Black Panther 2, and Black Widow as titles that have more or less been confirmed for Phase 4.

For those unfamiliar, the story of the Eternals began over five million years ago when the Celestials visited Earth and performed genetic experiments on early proto-humanity - creating two divergent raches: the long-lived Eternals and the genetically unstable Deviants. As for which characters we may see, THR strongly implies that Ikaris, Sersi, and Thena will be among the many characters introduced.

Maybe they'll help introduce the next major conflict after Thanos.

Yup, they could also be used to introduce the mutants.

@mrmonster: in Neil Gaiman's run the Eternals walked amongst man after a event caused them all to lose their memory's. I'm betting OG Avengers retire after A4. Leaving the MCU partly to the Eternals.

What brings their memory's back? When half the universe is returned with the IG I bet their memory's return with them. Launching a whole new phase.

They can not pull a DC and think that the concept will carry it to instant hit status. They have to try to make this interesting and entertaining (as they have on all or most prior MCU movies).

They're involved in both cosmic and Earth storylines. They occassionaly help the Avengers, I think. I haven't read their old stories.

There are Earth Eternals (Olympians) and Titan Eternals. Their nemesis are the Deviants. Both the Eternals and the Deviants are genetically engineered Gods (by the Celestials), but Deviants are corrupted.

There's an illness that can turn Titan Eternals into Deviants, which is what afflicted Thanos.

In Neil Gaimen's run all the Earth Eternals have lost their memory, except Ikaris' (the blond dude). Then the Deviants kidnap one of them to awaken a Celestial who can summon an army of aliens that bring about a day of judgement on Earth

I think they'll use Neil Gaimen's run as inspiration for the film.

Sounds like every superhero story. It matters what they do with it and if they manage to make us care.

Eternals are based on Greek Gods. So they'll have an Earth equivalent of the Asgardians.

Yes, it fits in perfectly, especially if they have Amnesia. That would explain their absence thus far.

ffff the Amnesia sounds lame. But they were just made to forget about their past and heritage. All of them, except one.

Celestials created them because they were trying to change the evolutionary chain. They made Man, Eternal and Deviant. Basically they landed on Earth and it was a planet inhabited by animals, non-intelligent lifeforms, so they started experimenting.

I don't know if you've seen Prometheus, but their roles in this are comparable to the Engineers, but they're God-like, yes.

All the Earth Eternals:

  • Ikaris
  • Ajak
  • Sirse
  • Makkari
  • Druig
  • Forgotten One
  • Thena
  • Phastos
  • Sprite

They can all teleport, manipulate matter and energy, blast energy and fly. Superhero stuff.

I believe we are going to see Deviants making some dmg first, then we'll be shown the Eternals saving the day along with the new Avengers and the big, bad guys, pulling the strings from the shadows - the Celestials. Not excluded Thanos evolved at some point as the good guy. Sounds interesting anyway.

But I hope they don't rush it. 7-8 years at least of developing the new phase.

Cautiously optimistic.... The Inhumans were a let down and I can see the Eternals going the same way is not given proper treatment. I would have preferred some version of the Squadron Supreme (as the post Thanos next threat), then the Eternals revealed through Hyperion.

@enigma-force:Couple of questions:

1. Since you said Olympians, would Marvel Zeus be considered an eternal?

2.Did you say Thanos a deviant?

3.What is Hyperion? (An Olympian god, Titan, Eternal, or something else)

Marvel's Zeus is not an Earthling or a Titan. He wasn't created by the Celestials. Just like the Asgardians, Heliopolitans, Olympians are real Gods and live in another dimension. Olympus is in another world.

The Eternals live in Olympia, its a city in Greece and its on Earth. It's all loosely based on ancient Greece. They were sometimes mistaken to be Gods by humans. That's why their names are so similar to ancient Greek heroes, Gods and towns.

Thanos (based on greek god of death Thanatos) is a Titan Eternal and he was affected by some illness that can turn Eternals into Deviants, but he's still technically an Eternal since he was born one. He has a brother Starfox (based on greek god Eros) who still looks and behaves like an Eternal.

Hyperion is an Eternal. I think from Titan.

  • Ikaris: Based on hero Icarus, who attempts to fly
  • Ajak: Based on the Trojan hero Ajax
  • Sirse: Circe, goddess of magic
  • Makkari: Hermes/Mercury, messenger God
  • Druig: Not sure
  • Forgotten One: Based on heroes like Hercules
  • Thena: Athena, god of wisdom and warfare
  • Phastos: Phaistos is an ancient town in Crete
  • Sprite: Puck, a nature spirit in English lore
  • Starfox: Eros, god of love
  • Thanos: Thanatos, god of death
  • Hyperion: One of the 12 Titans, who fathered the sun, moon and dawn.

Deviants are compared to mythical monsters and stuff.

When Kirby created the Eternals, he had just read all those conspiracy theories about Aliens building the pyramids and so forth. Basically, these characters were created to substitute the Gods of people like Egyptians, Greeks, Incas, etc.

They usually try to stop the day of judgement, the Apocalypse.

Speaking of Eternals, they are actually legit Gods, for example Thor & Hercules Encyclopedia classifies Eternals as a GOD race, and Eternals in comics on multiple occasions were called gods.

So i think it is fair to conclude and claim that Eternals are Gods.

Wouldn't say so really, since concept of Gilgamesh predates that of Hercules by a large margin, and in comics the Forgotten One is supposed to represent the Gilgamesh character that we know in real world, so we can't really say that he is based on both, in simplified terms, it's basically Marvel's interpretation of Gilgamesh.
