Honestly, it's due to WIS (or PIS/CIS...or all of them really). Hulk being scared of Thanos seemed apocryphal when I first heard about it, and sure, it dramatises the situation at hand, but it's completely out of character for Hulk to be like that. They should've at least let Hulk out during the Wakanda battle, right after Thor arrived.

2.If you just ignore the comics for a second, currently in the MCU the Hulk and Banner are mentally completely seperate, once that seperation began so did Hulk's mental growth, based on how he speaks and how he acted in Ragnorok you could guess he's comparable to a Toddler mentally. Given that because he's so much stronger than everybody he fought on Sakarr, in comparison to getting his ass completely beat by Thanos, it makes sense for him to be scared of Thanos.

Long story short, Hulk is a child

Russo's confirmed it wasn't that he was scared of Thanos. It was because he was mad at Banner.

Thanos gave Hulk a beat down and he took his ball and went home. LOL

Because the Hulk is terrified of Thanos and refuses to come out.

Hulk is sick of Banner and everyone treating him like hes an attack dog and not a person, he pretty much says that in Thor Ragnarok
