There were some concerns over Robert Downey Jr. potentially not signing a new contract with Marvel Studios and, seeing as he's been doing a superb job with his role, that would suck quite a lot. Luckily, that's not the case and the actor has signed a two-picture agreement with the studio. He'll reprise the role in Marvel's The Avengers 2 and Marvel's The Avengers 3. No word on any other films, though, so that could mean Marvel Studios is happy with Iron Man's solo adventure ending as a trilogy and, in turn, this would grant other characters more time to shine. And as you likely know, they have plans for quite a few characters.

Marvel's The Avengers 2 starts production in 2014 and is set to hit theaters May 1, 2015. Viners, I assume this news has you stoked, yes?

No more solo Iron Man flicks? I think there will be more off them but only after Downey leaves for good and the next one will be used to introduce the new actors.

I actually never thought he would quit. Being part of the 3rd and 5th highest grossing movies of all time doesn't make people quit.

@themanintheshoe: It's not about him quitting, it was about his contract ending and basically being all up to Marvel whether or not they wanted to renew it again. Obviously, they didn't want to ignore the star power he brought to the films.

To play iron man? ha no Robert Downey jr won't play ironman/tony stark he will play the embarrassing, arrogant joke he played in ironman 3 so the idiot film goer can laugh and call him rebellious because he mocks everyone around him and only acts to further his ego.

its a real shame the Ironman franchise is so closely tied to the avenger that we cannot have a reboot, where iron man is done right.

@novemberx2: They'll probably make a soft reboot once the new actor is chosen and RDJ leaves. One thats still cannon with whats already there but not tied down by it.

Avengers 3 was announced?! Wtf, I never heard about this.

Also, no IM movie being between A2 and A3 seems fishy to me as that's their biggest solo money making hero right now. I wonder if Tony might be going somewhere because of what happens in 2, only to come back in 3? IDK just spit balling...

@novemberx2: Even though I had my problems with Iron Man 3 I think it did serve to show him getting more mature. So maybe avengers will have him acting more like his comic book counterpart in the next film.

The only way I would have accepted his resignation or contract being void, is if Don would have continued as War Machine. That way the team would still have an ``Iron Man".

@ccraft: I'm willing to bet Marvel wants to cap Avengers as a trilogy so they can do a reboot after. Not calling this a good idea I'm just assuming that's the plan.

To be honest they don't need any more iron man films. I've had my fill and I enjoyed them all.

@ekrolo: I never said I wanted it to happen its just my gut feeling. I'd prefer they didn't as well but not much we can do to stop it if they want to go that route.

@joshmightbe: I wouldn't want to see a reboot either, it would be cool to see more members join. Cap needs a new suit though

Can I vote for forever? Because I'd like to vote for forever. I wasn't a fan of IM3, but Robert Downey Jr was great in it.

Cinematic Universe is always different from the source, have you not realised it yet? See TDK trilogy, Batman is weaker in Nolanverse, and yet, people loved it... Same goes to Iron Man. I don't care much about how Tony Stark is portrayed on the silver screen, and I actually kind of enjoy RDJ's performances as Tony Stark

I'm not OK with this, the ending of IM 3 was disappointing. I hope that Robert Downey Jr will think again about this, because there needs to be a Iron Man IV where Iron Man is the star. In the third it was about Tony Stark and his demons. And now we need a come back like after "A demon in a bottle" arc.

nice I love RDJ as Tony Stark/Ironman!!!!!!!!!! I enjoyed all three films and did not want to see RDJ leave the role. Avengers 3 and 4? no IM4? because I want an IM4.

It was really only a matter of time, both parties played hardball. Marvel put themselves in the situation because of the contract they gave him for the first one, obviously he wouldn't take a worse contract and Marvel Studios/Disney wanted to keep more. Eventually the studio would have to relent, it was just about squeezing the last penny out of each other.

Am I the only person who thinks that the only Iron Man appearances from now on will be in Avengers films? Marvel Studios has said they will only put out two films a year so with all of the franchises they are trying to start, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, etc., one is bound to be a hit, maybe not Iron Man big but enough to make a trilogy. That leaves little room for even a reboot of Iron Man, which would be at least five to seven years away at best.

Yeah, I really don't think we need more solo IM films. I thought the first was one of the best superhero films ever made, probably tied with the Avengers, after The Dark Knight. Iron Man 2 and 3, however? Kind of messy.

I've just had a thought about rebooting The Avengers.

In the past it has been easy to reboot franchises like Batman, Spiderman, Superman et al because they have all been stand alone film series'. But with the Avengers they are part of a larger film universe. If you reboot the Avengers then do you reboot Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and Captain America too? and what about the films in development or rumoured like Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant -Man and Dr. Strange. Would we have to reboot them too? Would it not interfere with the established universes internal logic if they did brand new origin stories? or could they do something akin to a cinema Ultimate universe where the previous Marvel universe stands as it is and they introduce an alternate universe?

Good news. I hope they don't do any more Iron Man solo movies (the last one was an okay movie, but not good/great) and instead move on to other, new, characters. Leave RDJ for Avengers so he still has his presence there.

I hope Marvel/Disney starts treating the other actors better though, and maybe that was what finally made RDJ sign on. They wouldn't even pay for Chris Hemsworth's (Thor) gym membership!
