Respect Despero

An ancient foe for the heroic group known as the Justice League -- the space tyrant of Kalanor, Despero! Despero was originally a scrawny (but highly intelligent) member of the Kalanor race who used his third eye to mentally dominate those around him.

However; after facing many defeats at the hand of the Justice League he decided he needed to change and thus he took a risk and bathed in the Flame of Py'tar. The Flame granted him a vastly improved physique and reality warping abilities -- over time he lost the reality warping powers, but kept his physique.

Combining brains and brawn -- Despero is one team-buster that the Justice League struggles against, time and time again.

1.0 - Origin

While a small portion of his origin was touched upon in the introduction it's beneficial to get the story from Despero himself.

Issue: Justice League of America #253 - Pyre

Basically -- Kalanor was originally ruled by a different species; however, they built a massive nuclear reactor that backfired and led to the death and/or mutation of that species. From the resulting radiation storms a lower life form began to evolve, and from this came Despero's ancestors.

They were all intensely competitive and slaughtered one another for control. Eventually, Despero's father was the winner and ruled over the planet of Kalanor. Despero's mother, also competitive, tried to kill his father but failed -- fortunately for Despero, he would succeed.

Despero would then go to face off against the heroes that made up the Justice League, suffering from several humiliating defeats and leading to his imprisonment. When Despero made it back to Kalanor he was determined to become stronger and he believed that the Flame of Py'tar would aid him in that. He stepped into the Flame and endured extreme pain and agony, his atoms shattered and he became nothing -- but then he was reborn.

2.0 - Profiles/Handbook Entries/Statements

Here's where all the various profile entries or discussions about Despero's power(s) will be thrown in -- they're mostly here for fun and to use as a quick reference.

Issue: R.E.B.E.L.S. Annual: Starro The Conqueror

A common theme in the second volume of R.E.B.E.L.S. was to list the homeworld and abilities of characters it featured. Despero is listed with strength, speed, invulnerability, telepathy, telekinesis and mind-control.

All of those attributes will be featured in the powers & abilities section -- but it's nice to see them summarized here.

Issue: Justice League America #57 - The Descent of... Despero!

A fun little bit of statistics about Despero that come from a file on 'Interstellar Marauders' -- he's conquered 46 worlds, destroyed 16 and killed 5.6 billion sentient creatures.

The best part is that 1.0 billion of those murders are listed as 'too gruesome' to detail.

3.0 - Powers & Abilities

3.1 - Physical Statistics

After bathing in the Flame of Py'tar, Despero gained enhanced physical attributes that allow him to go toe-to-toe with many of the Justice League's heaviest hitters, thus giving him team-buster status.

Many of his physical attributes will be show-cased in the 'fights' section, but here are some showings that highlight various attributes.

Strength

Showings of pure physical strength will be listed here.

An illusion inside an illusion.

Teleportation

Not a very often used ability, but Despero's Third Eye allows for teleportation.

3.3 - Regeneration/Molecular Control

Despero has a decent healing factor -- it's not as quick as Wolverine's or Deadpool's -- but he can survive total body loss.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3

Issue: JLA/JSA: Virtue and Vice

Context: Despero's mind had merged with Lex Luthor, allowing him to posses Luthor. When the time was right he transformed the body from a normal human body to his own ultra-durable body, which later allowed him to go toe to toe with heavyweights such as Superman, Power Girl and Captain Marvel, all at once.

No Caption Provided

For further clarity, Despero was eventually exorcised from Luthor -- we see the two of them separating after this.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2

Issue: R.E.B.E.L.S. #12 - Secret Weapons

Context: Despero had previously been beheaded by Starro the Conqueror. When approached by Vril Dox II it's mentioned that it'd take weeks for Despero to fully regenerate his body -- but it's still possible. Dox did accelerate his healing with science after this, but it's unknown if it was a one time thing or if that stuck with Despero. I'm 99.9% sure it was a one time thing.

3.4 - Flame of Py'tar

This section highlights abilities that Despero strictly when he was fully connected to the Flame of Py'tar -- mostly enhanced energy projection & reality warping.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3

Issue: Justice League of America #250 - The Return of the Justice League of America + Justice League of America #253 - Pyre

3.5 - Nth Metal Evolution

During the 'Death of Hawkman' story Despero had Nth Metal infused with his body. It granted him some enhanced regenerative properties as well as some shape-shifting and increased durability.

4.0 - Fights + Battles

Despero is a team-buster, and as such, has a plethora of fights against the various incarnations of the Justice League. This section will highlight those fights in full so we can see his abilities in action.

Issue: Justice League America #39 - Blow Up + Justice League America #40 - Hell on Earth

Context: Despero takes on the Justice League of America -- consisting of Guy Gardner, Fire, Ice, Blue Beetle (Ted Kord), Mister Miracle and MMH. He KO's Guy with an energy blast and KO's ice with some debris. Fire is taken out via telepathy and Mister Miracle's ship is blown up with an energy blast. Kord is getting manhandled when MMH shows up and uses a one-time Martian Ability to override Despero's mind, making him believe he had killed every member of the Justice League.

This is the ONLY time MMH can use that ability and it's the only time a telepathic attack has worked against Despero.

This was the start of the L-Ron era which eventually ended when Despero regains control -- but this is the fight in which L-Ron gained control.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8

Issue: Justice League Europe #36 - Breakdowns: Postscript

Context: Now in the body of L-Ron he fights against the Justice League. He school's them but L-Ron's body is easily blown apart by a simple shotgun.

This is mostly impressive due to how his consciousness took control of a different body and commanded it so well.

Issue: Supergirl #17 - Teetering On Oblivion

Context: N52 Despero - Fights against Element Woman, Firestorm and Atomica. He's bested when MMH comes in an reverses the flow of his brain's synapses. This is a weird fight to me because MMH later gets trapped in Despero's illusions, so I don't know how he won this fight, but whatever. I'm including it for thoroughness.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4

Issue: Death of Hawkman #3 - Strange Bedfellows

Context: Despero returns to his home planet of Kalanor and kills those who exiled him. He utilizes fire-breath here so it looks like that's become one of his abilities moving forward into Rebirth. He also uses his powers to pop the brains of his foes, killing them instantly.

No Caption Provided

Issue: Death of Hawkman #4 - Out of Time Part 4: Retribution (And Other Catastrophes)

Context: Steals some power from the Elders who exiled him, kills them.

Conclusion

Despero has certainly evolved over time and with the Death of Hawkman serving as his entry into Rebirth it's exciting to wonder where he'll end up.

Hope you enjoy & be on the lookout for more Respect Threads in the future!

I don't know much about Despero but his Justice League Animated Series episodes were super lame. Probably even the worst in the series. Maybe that could be added to his feats?

I know I'm missing some of his N52 stuff but he wasn't all that impressive during his short run. I've got his fight with some of the JL (Firestorm/Element Woman/Atomica/MMH) and what he did to the JL during Forever Evil -- but aside from that I can't recall anything significant, I'll look again though.

Woah. Very nice.

Thanks!

I've got those in there as well!

Really excited to see what he manages to do with his buff during the series -- the fact that he instantly reformed from his 'death' was pretty impressive.

Ah just saw them. Yeah it was pretty cool. It's nice to see him as powerhouse.

This is actually really great, I didn't have much hopes when I saw it was a Despero RT (being quite knowledgable myself I feel he is consistently overplayed) however this is pretty spot on.

@thetruebarryallen: Nice thread mate. Damn shame your not all that active anymore :(

Honestly trying to work on getting back on the site more. My current computer is absolute crap but I'm getting a new one at the end of the month.

Crazy how life gets as busy as it does sometimes. I miss debating as frequently as I used to, feel like the majority of these new wipper-snappers don't know who I am haha.

Good. We need more hardworking debaters and respect thread makers on this site. Cant wait to see you back in tourneys and CaVs.
