Ah, but Mordru is not without mercy. I grant you this fate. That you might appreciate your folly, and do penance. For all eternity.

Introduction

Well, I guess this was gonna happen eventually. Mordru's got a lot of hype on the forums and is probably one of the least understood characters in terms of how people debate him: they always show the usual hits, but they never actually cover what he can do in proper detail, proper analysis. In this series, I'll be doing basically that job to the extreme: we're going to see Mordru's feats from here, to Zero Hour, to Post Crisis, to Rebirth, and then beyond. Everything will be uncovered, no stone left unturned.

The first mistake people make is lumping all versions of Mordru together. This isn't the Lord of Chaos Mordru: that retcon wasn't introduced yet. This is simply a tyrant wizard with a lot of power on his hands, and a lot of the galaxy to conquer. He's a classic bad-guy in that sense but underlining that is a sense of loneliness: Mordru is so in denial that anyone could love him properly that even when confirmed to his face that his ex-wife still has feelings for him, he shuts down and just assumes it isn't real. Under the usual villain clichés and gimmicks is a lonely old soul that just wants approval and acceptance...ofc he also kills a lot of people and establishes brutal dictatorships but hey, can't be perfect. He's also really powerful, so I guess we should cover that as well.

Duplication

Scan 1/2- Makes his own Cosmic Boy, abet he mimics his powers with his magic. This was identical to the real thing beyond that, memories and all. (Superboy #173)

Durability

No Caption Provided

Mordru is immortal and can't actually die, however he can be dispatched and defeated in other ways, like being induced into a coma or being KO'd. (Adventure Comic #369)

No Caption Provided

Mordru morphs his form to no sell the entire Legion combined with a enchanted armor (Adventure Comic #369)

No Caption Provided

No sells a combined attack from Lightning Lad, Superboy, Karate Kid all at once (Superboy #245)

No Caption Provided

Survives his own sun attack when reflected back at him, abet this did KO him. (Legion of Super Heroes #48)

Scan 1/2- Tanks a shot from Superboy while not braced, one shots him and his mates again and banishes them to his own court (Adventure Comics #370)

No Caption Provided

Tanks shots from the JLA and JSA all attacking him at once. It should be noted that he's half-power at this point: see "Low Showings" for more info. (Justice League of America #147)

Scan 1/2/3- The entire Legion hammering on him at the same time does effect him, but not close to being actually defeated. The Legion admit later in the fight via telepathic exchange that they don't have any idea how to handle him. (Superboy #245)

Elemental Power

No Caption Provided

Could control any force in the universe, apparently (Who's Who in the Legion of Super-Heroes #5)

Scan 1/2- Creates gems that instil a insane hate for Superboy when viewed, causing them to do anything to try to hurt or kill him. (Superboy #188)

No Caption Provided

Creates mini fire tornados indoors (Legion of Super Heroes #60)

No Caption Provided

Dumps black hail on people because he's a troll (Legion of Super-Heroes #276)

Scan 1/2- Summons a fog construct that can't be harmed beyond targeting the core, no selling the Legion's offence by being intangible. (Legion of Super-Heroes #276)

No Caption Provided

Summons mini stars to beat up some Legion heavies, including Ultra-Man and Laurel Gand, a Daxamite, KO'ing them instantly. (Legion of Super Heroes #47)

Scan 1- Summons numerous shadow constructs that rip apart people just by flying through them, as well as being strong enough to harass and damage Legion members. (Final Crisis- Legion of Three Worlds #3)

Scan 2- Even a issue later and with the fight progressed a fair bit, these continue to be around, as they are virtually endless. (Final Crisis- Legion of Three Worlds #4)

Scan 1/2- Uses lightning blasts to send Smallville into space (Adventure Comics #370)

Energy Absorption

No Caption Provided

Steals the energies of the top mystics of his planet in a instant after ambushing them. This is Zerox, a planet where the strongest magicians in history reside from. According to a later scan that we'll look at, even the weakest of this planet are equal to Dr Fate. (Legion of Super Heroes #58)

Scan 1- Drains Kinetix of her knowledge and magical strength when she dies, which also meant he absorbed the mystical energy of Earth-247, which was enough for him to drain the rest of the Legion and bring back his fallen allies. (Final Crisis Legion of Three Worlds #4)

Scan 2- A lot of people incorrectly assume this to be Mordru "draining a universe" when Earth-247 was completely erased: the Crisis removed it from existence, so he's really just draining a singular person with a ton of mystic energies.

Force Fields

No Caption Provided

Seals the Legion and the JLA with JSA members in a unbreakable globe that they are incapable of escaping from (Justice League of America #147)

No Caption Provided

Traps Superboy and Legion members in a field that expands gravity a thousand times (Superboy #245)

No Caption Provided

Traps the JLA and some JSA members in a cage, with even Fate being incapable of escaping with a amp from both Alan Scott and Hal Jordan. (Justice League of America #147)

No Caption Provided

Traps the Legion inside a unbreakable sphere. It should be noted that these ARE unbreakable: every time Mordru gets one on, it doesn't get broken with raw physical force, but rather either phasing out of it or some other trickery. This one got broke out when the Legion managed to imprison Mordru within a container, which nerfs his powers. (Superboy #245)

Heat Projection

No Caption Provided

Creates heat stronger than the sun's core (Adventure Comic #369)

Low Showings

No Caption Provided

Gets beat off panel by Superboy by being imprisoned (Superboy #188)

No Caption Provided

Gets blitzed by Superboy and Ultra-Boy and locked up (Adventure Comic #369)

No Caption Provided

Gets defeated after his powers bury himself (Adventure Comics #370)

No Caption Provided

Gets harmed by a regular sword and made to bury himself again (Legion of Super-Heroes #276)

Scan 1- Is nerfed by half due to wizards sealing him on Earth (Justice League of America #147)

Scan 2- A alternative explanation is that Mordru being buried for long enough reduces his powers overtime. It should be noted that each of these don't really get brought up a lot, so they are rather dubious as explanations. (Superboy #245)

No Caption Provided

The Demons Three wreck him in like two seconds. Not THAT bad considering the Demons Three were conquerors that ruled basically reality itself before man, but they still lost to the Justice League, so..... (Justice League of America #147)

Magic Power

No Caption Provided

Almost rips Blok from the inside out (Final Crisis Legion of Three Worlds #5)

No Caption Provided

Is stated to be able to destroy galaxies, abet never comes close to doing so....as well as this amazing galaxy ending blast doing nothing but get Mordru buried and it seemingly never managed to destroy much. (Adventure Comics #370)

No Caption Provided

KO's the Legion after a extremely short fight (Justice League of America #147)

No Caption Provided

Lost to a whole planet of magic users combined in a uprising, which even at their weakest were as strong as Fate himself. (Justice League of America #147)

No Caption Provided

One shots Superboy (Adventure Comic #369)

Scan 1/2- One shots Superboy as well as three more Legionaries (Adventure Comics #370)

Scan 1/2- Overwhelms future Rond Vidar, as well as overpowering his construct army (Final Crisis- Legion of 3 Worlds #2)

Range

Scan 1/2- Mordru uses his magic to disable advanced future tech galaxies away, leaving uncounted planets victim to his army of ships and his own magical offence (Adventure Comic #369)

Reincarnation

No Caption Provided

Brings back the dead bodies of his victims (Final Crisis- Legion of 3 Worlds #2)

Scan 1/2/3- Brings back a bunch of dead Legion and past heroes to fight for him. This happened all across the universe at the same time, and the dead were capable of using their powers just fine despite being, well, dead. This was done after a short ritual but nothing spectacular. (Legion of Super Heroes #44)

Scan 4- This also accounted for those who died during the fight as well, as seen when a fodder soldier dies in combat, then almost instantly becomes apart of the undead legion. (Legion of Super Heroes #45)

Scan 5- These zombies were relentless as well, attacking for hours and hours, as well as growing stronger with time. (Legion of Super Heroes #46)

Speed

No Caption Provided

Tags Karate Kid mid leap before he can hit him (Superboy #244)

Strength

No Caption Provided

Mordru's giant hands are strong enough to rip apart Power Girl, and Sliver Age Sups struggles to even move them (Justice League of America #147)

No Caption Provided

While giant, Mordru stuns a bunch of the JLA and JSA by escaping his bonds and sending them flying, despite being half power (Justice League of America #147)

Telepathy

No Caption Provided

Amps up his servants to pick up communications from a Legion fight planets away (Legion of Super Heroes #46

Scan 1/2- Creates city wide illusions from centuries away. For context, they were in the present day, he was in the 31st century. (Adventure Comic #369)

No Caption Provided

Scans all of Earth to try to find the Legion, abet gets blocked out by Saturn Girl (Superboy #245)

No Caption Provided

Scans through the minds of Smallville in a instant (Adventure Comics #370)

No Caption Provided

Sticks Superman inside a vault and prevents him to leave via suggestion. Superman needs to use Lex Luthor and a uber complicated scheme to trick him into freeing himself, the whole premise of this issue. (Superman #213)

No Caption Provided

TP's a million Khunds to hunt down the Legion (Superboy #245)

Scan 1/2/3/4- Traps multiple Legion members in within complex illusions of their past, ripped directly from their memories. (Legion of Super Heroes #6)

No Caption Provided

With just a fraction of his powers, he disables the minds of the whole Legion (Adventure Comic #369)

Scan 1/2/3- Drags the JSA and JLA to the future after no selling Doctor Fate's magic and overpowering him (Justice League of America #147)

Scan 1/2- Summons his legion from the 31st century in seconds to help him out (Adventure Comics #370)

Scan 1/2- Travels from the future to the present day after tracking down the Legion members (Adventure Comic #369)

Conclusion

It should be noted this is only one part of a few: but from what you can see, Mordru is already extremely powerful, and rightfully regarded as a teambuster in how he can clear through teams not just with overwhelming power, but with a ton of versatility as well. Do his other incarnations match up to this? We'll see.

Credit

No credit this time! I can give credit (abet rather cheekily) to the other RT's I've seen of him that I wasn't too much of a fan of: they seemed to ignore Mordru's actual power in favour for a less detailed, more wanky incarnation. Hopefully this has provided something a bit better than just the usual music notes you hear over and over.

This is apart of my Mordru series I'm currently doing. This is part 1 of a 5 part series, namely covering the main stages of Mordru's development via feats.

Was he the 30th Century Mordru when he was working with Glorith? If so shouldn't the feat of him absorbing half of Infinite Man's power count as well?

I would probably regard it as such, however it's a shared feat + Glorith added in extra power to a unknown extent...also I'd added it to Glorith's RT so I couldn't be bothered, etc.

Which version of Mordu is this?

Mostly Pre Crisis/Pre Zero Hour. Basically before his God of Chaos retcon in the early 90's and the Mordruverse in Legion.
