Alright. So I am thinking of creating a ranked list of all the major comic book movies that has been released. Each vote will count and contribute to the final score.
Rate The Movie: Iron Man 3
This movie is one of my favourite Marvel films. I get the complaints about the underwhelming villains and the silly switcher-oo, but there's so much to love.
I feel this movie, one of the most hated MCU films, is ironically the opposite of what most criticise the MCU for. People criticise Marvel for placing restrains on their directors and making everything factory-like, and here we get an MCU film without constraints. This isn't an Iron Man film. This isn't a Marvel film. This is a Shane Black film. Anyone familiar with his work (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Nice Guys) will agree.
You know that kid in the movie everyone rags on about, saying Marvel "forced" a kid into the movie because kids sell? That isn't the case. Shane Black loves child characters in almost all of his movies. He also loves Christmas, and he loves switcheroo-s. I'm not saying people hate this movie for being director-driven, but I wish more people would celebrate it. I love the fact that Marvel allowed a director to make his own film without any constraints. I much, much, much prefer Iron Man 3 to something like Doctor Strange.
I also love Tony's arc in this movie. I thought the choice to have him spend 85% of the movie outside of the armour was genius. He IS Iron Man. This isn't a movie about fighting a big bad and saving the day. It's about a man that has everything, who loses everything, fights his own demons, winning and coming back stronger than ever. "Big man in a suit of armour. Take that away what are you?" Iron Man 3 exists to answer this question.
I rate this movie a 9.
When you have an a potential all time great villain on your hands and turn him into a farting stoner for the sake of making the kids laugh.
Wasn't funny. Wasn't surpising even. We knew Guy Pearce was the bad guy from the start. But they threw away what was such a badass performance by one of the best into pure idiocy.
It was Hangover 2 level of dumb as far as I'm concerned. The movie is shit.
The Mandarin twist is overhated, however the lack of Iron Man in the first and second acts, and Tony stupid anxiety is annoying. Tony getting rid of his reactor was stupid too.
This movie is a little underrated, but still has some problems. The sad thing is that those problems could had been easily fixed but writers/director did a stupid job
I love Iron Man 3. Its actually my favourite MCU film.
I love the fact that Tony has PTSD from the events that unfolded in The Avengers. The whole movie was character driven.
My only qualm is when Pepper became super. I think it would've been a more emotional arc if she died (given that she's basically out of the MCU anyway).
Its no where near as bad as IM2.
Obviously. So there was no point to the twist. I knew Kingsley wasn't the real villain, which makes in in more mind boggling that they threw away an otherwise great performance.
That would be like Winter Soldier taking off his mask only to reveal a clown underneath. We all knew he wasn't the real badguy, but they didn't turn him into a joke just because he was a pawn.
I don't care about being true to the character or not. I don't care about comic Mandarin. My issue is fully within the context of the film. It went from somewhat entertaining to completely dumb.
@fallschirmjager: The point of Trevor's character was to smoke screen Aldrich, who was the mastermind behind the bombings. Aldrich needed a face to these bombings so he wasn't targeted. Having a terrorist was the perfect cover. The twist was put in place to explain this.
Your example with The Winter Soldier is paper thin. That's not what it was like at all.
I do think the humour in the reveal was a tad too much, however.
I was just thinking about this movie! Iron Man 3 was actually an alright action movie. The fight scenes were cool, the plot was easily to follow without being too generic, and it had a clear and seemingly well-thought out message at the end. But as an MCU movie and the end of the Iron Man trilogy it left a lot to be desired. Not only The Mandarin and the Ten Rings being faked (or pretending to be faked according to All Hail the King), but the entire thing just had a lot of poop jokes, weak Iron Man suits, bizarre plot points like a kid sidekick, etc. That's why I think it's a good 6/10. Nice action popcorn flick, disappointing Iron Man movie.
@monsterstomp: i understand his role was a smokescreen. I dont have a problem with that.
My problem is the fact that he was actually a farting stoner. I havent laughed at a fart since i was 5. Its not funny its stupid. No different than laughing at a sneeze.
That's my problem. The movie is just dumb because of that decision and i have a low tolerance for dumb
4 because I like RDJ. They threw away a major character in the Mandarin. They could have made a Mandarin and Fin Fang Room movie, but now we're not likely to see either any time soon. They threw away a good story too. Why didn't they just make a movie about Extremis and leave it at that? It was just a huge waste of source material.
