Netflix Announces live-action "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series

"After the favorite anime-inspired series hit theaters in a live-action flop, it seems Netflix will try to work its magic on the epic series. According to the company's See What's Next account on Twitter, the streaming service is working on a "reimagined" take on Aang's story."

Just keep M. Night Shyamalan as far away from it as humanly possible.

There is literally nothing you can do to improve on the cartoon. The only road I can see them taking is making it darker and more serious.

Well, the last time we got a Live Action Avatar.... it's just best to forget that ever happend.

I would be fine with it being edgier. Imo if it's the original creators maybe they will add some elements to deepen the lore. Maybe pull in some stuff that worked with korra...just not korra.

Who's to say how they'll turn out in Live Action. A movie has a huge budget and less time to fill, this will be a whole series where they are going to have to have a huge SFX budget. Netflix has the dough, sure, but will they put it into a series like this. But anyway, I'm mainly talking about it from a story telling standpoint, not an effects standpoint.

leaning into the already dark elements of the show (airbender genocide and a nazi regime) while still keeping the lightheartedness of the show could work, but I still don't see a reason for it. Avatar was the pinnacle of animation in the west (albeit Anime influenced), the show was a solid 9 and I don't see how they can match/surpass that bar.

I hope they cast everyone properly. That's my greatest concern. The four nations are ethnically/cultures distinct and parallel real cultures, and it would be nice if that showed.

Honestly, I think this could be great. Yes M. Night Shaymalan really screwded it up, but this is a chance to do it right. I love the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I'm hyped for this until I have reason not to be.

Netflix should have just funded a prequel Avatar animated series or even a sequel Avatar animated series post ATLA but pre Korra. The elemental bending doesn't look good at all in live action, it needs to be animation.

My inner fanboy just passed out from excitement, so the more critical part of me will just say that they should have told a new story in the same universe. There's not much to improve in ATLA.

This part always confuses me. I thought the earth kingdom and the fire nation had Asian backgrounds, the Water Tribe Inuit/Native American/Indigenous and the Air Nomads as a mixing bowl of everything. Based on how everyone else is portrayed I'd always thought Aang (other characters like Suki as well) was outright or nigh-White, at least a lot closer than straight up Japanese or something.

Live Action

No lie, definitely excited. A live-action series with the proper crew and budget behind it could be immense.

It could be quite good, especially if the original creators are involved.

As long as Shamalamadingdong doesn't touch it, I think it could be decent.

I am pretty sure his daughter is the one who asked him to make a movie adaption. I wonder how she feels about it. xD

Given Netflix's track record in making live action anime adaptations, i don't have much faith as of right now. Though it may change once trailers or positive news about the production come out.

I doubt this will be good. Netflix doesn’t have a good track record with these kinds of adaptations, and it doesn’t have the budget to do a well done series that does Avatar justice.

Fire Nation is Japanese, Earth Kingdom is mostly Chinese, Air Nomads are Tibetan, and Water Tribe are Inuit. There is some wiggle room but this is more or less the case.

After watching The Dragon Prince on Netflix, I have faith that they can get this right.

I don't see them doing the bending justice on a Netflix budget.

Also why do we need a Live Action adaptation?

With the original creators involved it'll probably be fine quality-wise, but...why is it needed? Why do we need another version of the same story? Yes, there's a difference in visuals between animation and live action but it's still the story and characters we've already seen before.

Truthfully, I would love to see a Last Airbender movie, be it animation (preferred) or live action, that takes place years AFTER the main series, when Aang and the gang are adults but set before Korra. Show us something new that moves forward with something we already like or at least lets us see more of it instead of just the exact same thing over again.

Ehhh I don't know if this will be good. How will they portray airbending without it looking like cheesy TK. Plus I doubt people will be satisfied with the casting. I'm not excited about this one.
