Something that really really excites me about comics is when a writer works on a comic that you wouldn't expect them to. Examples include Alan Moore on Superman, Neil Gaiman on Batman, Geoff Johns on the Avengers and especially Stan Lee writing many DC characters in a special spinoff! This also extends to people outside comics coming in to write, such as Kevin Smith and Allan Heinburg on Batman and Young Avengers respectively. In light of this I'd really like to hear some of the unusual writers you've seen working on a Marvel or DC title, chances are I'll probably pick it up!

Harlon Ellison wrote Daredevil #208-209 It was a mediocre story, truth be told, but quite a name on a comic book.

seeing David Mack on Daredevil: End of Days has been really interesting. He darkens the tone even in a Daredevil book, and his cover art is something you wouldn't normally see on a Marvel title.

Neil Gaiman on Marvel 1602 and Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?

I did not care for the latter, but Marvel 1602 is great. His tone is quite unique.

Dan Slott on Spider-man. I admire, that he had balls to kill Spider-man and his writing is awesome.
