1.0 Origin

Not much is known about Mordru's true origin. He is stated to have existed before the creation of the universe and will exist long after it is destroyed. He was never born and will never die.

Since his origin doesn't really "exist" in any convenient form, here are his handbook entries.

2.0 20th Century Mordru

Mordru is unique in his physiology. He exists as a being of sentient energy who was alive before the birth of the universe and who will exist long after it is destroyed. It is because of this that Mordru needs a host body to utilize the full potential of his magic.

In the 20th Century Mordru utilized a variety of different bodies; including Lord Wrynn, Doctor Fate and Arion.

2.1 Physical Attributes

Mordru is primarily, a spell-caster; however, as a Lord of Chaos he has a unique physiology and enhanced physical attributes.

Strength

  • JSA #3 - Takes Starman's staff from his hands and bashes him with it, rips off Hawkgirl's wings, and breaks Wildcat's arm.
  • JSA #47 - Throws a car at Powergirl.

Durability

  • JSA #3 - Hourman had attempted to devolve Mordru but his timeline has no beginning or end, seemingly immune to time manipulation.
  • JSA #47 - Engages in a physical brawl with Powergirl. Gets hit multiple times but is unphased, views their encounter as a game.
  • JSA #79 - Gets punched around by Flash, Sand and Wildcat. Is submerged in magma. Survives it all just fine.
  • Justice Society of America #35 - Survives a giant explosion after going through reentry from space where he was fighting Alan Scott. Is then hit by everything the JSA can throw at him, survives that too, as they had to BFR him to win the fight.

Speed

  • JSA #3 - Was able to react to Jay Garrick and Wonder Woman trying to blitz him; teleported them away.
  • Justice Society of America #35 - Casts almost half a dozen spells simultaneously before anyone in the JSA could react. Doctor Fate comments that he can't cast spells that quickly and believes that not even the OG Fate could.

2.2 Spell-Casting

All of Mordru's main power lies in his various spell-casting abilities.

Absorption

Mordru has spells that can absorb power.

  • JSA #4 - Casts the Spell of Onyx Hunger, a spell created by Arion, which was absorbing the power of Doctor Fate while they were fighting. It made Fate weaker and Mordru stronger.

Containment

Mordru has a variety of spells that result in the containment/capture of his foes.

  • JSA #79 - Ties up multiple members of the JSA (Flash, Wildcat, Doctor Mid-Nite, Doctor Fate/Nabu) at once.

Energy Blasts/Destruction

These spells are various blasts of energy that cause pain, death and destruction.

  • JSA #1 - Kills Kid Eternity with one of his blasts. Commentary shows he had killed all the heroes that Kid Eternity had summoned from the past, including Perseus & Pegasus, Alexander the Great, Audie Murphy, The Trigger Twins, Lawrence of Arabia, and King Arthur.
  • JSA #2 - Lightning blast that seriously harms Atom Smasher, Hourman, Hawk Girl and Wildcat.

  • JSA #50 - Uses multiple energy blasts to severely damage several JSA members at once. Turns the explosive power of Damage and The Human Bomb against them.
  • Justice Society of America #35 - Destroys a variety of Alan Scott's constructs.

Force Fields

Mordru can employ Force Fields to protect himself from attacks.

Illusions

Mordru can produce illusions & disguise himself.

Mordru is capable of matter manipulation and transmutation.

  • JSA #3 - Manipulates his own size to become huge; effortlessly downs Atom Smasher after he had enhanced his own size.
  • JSA #4 - Transmutes Alan Scott into wood and Starman's staff into a giant snake.
  • JSA #4 - Transmutes Hawk Girl and Black Canary into birds; transmutes Atom Smasher into a painting.
  • JSA #50 - Transmutes Uncle Sam into a poster and Iron Munro into an iron statue.

Possession

Due to Mordru being an energy being he possesses other bodies to serve as a root or tether into the physical world.

  • JSA #46 - Possessed the body of Hank Hall and turned him into Extant. Is currently possessing the body of Doctor Fate.
  • Justice Society of America #34 - Possesses the body of Doctor Fate. Eventually leaves the body when he has enough strength to exist in a body of his own creation.

Regeneration

Mordru can use his magic to regenerate lost limbs.

  • JSA #3 - Regrows a hand after it had been blasted off by Starman.

Teleportation

Mordru is capable of teleportation through various dimensions.

  • JSA #3 - Teleports into the Tower of Fate.
  • JSA #3 - Teleports Jay Garrick and Wonder Woman away when they try to blitz him.
  • JSA #50 - Had been "trapped" inside Jakeem Thunder's pen that stores Thunderbolt, the 5th dimensional imp. He was able to free himself.
  • Justice Society of America #35 - Teleported the members of the JSA into separate box dimensions. Each one was suited to play against their strengths and weaknesses.

2.3 Fights

Showcased here are the full length fights that Mordru has been in. Scans may have been taken from these fights for other sections. These are mainly here for context.

  • JSA #4 - Fights against the JSA, primarily a fight against Doctor Fate. Fate loses his helmet, but Mordru is absorbed into Fate's amulet when he puts it on.

  • JSA #78 - Escapes his imprisonment from the Rock of Eternity and battles with Shazam, the wizard. He flies away and it isn't really a big "fight" but seemed worthy of being put here.

  • Justice Society of America #35 - Fights against Alan Scott & then the entire JSA, has to be BFR'd for them to win.

2.4 Misc.

This is a misc. section for anything of Mordru's that doesn't fit the above categories.

  • JSA #23 - The spell that Mordru put on her is why she is in a coma.
  • JSA #26 - Doctor Fate is unable to break the spell.
  • JSA #32 - Doctor Fate consults Nabu to figure out how to break the spell. He is given false information by Mordru who is speaking through Nabu, all of this has been Mordru's plan.
  • JSA #41-44 - Doctor Fate does what "Nabu" told him to do and goes to Gemworld. There he meets Flaw and Cutter. Cutter is actually Child, another Chaos Lord, in disguise. They trick Fate and he returns home to save who he believes is his wife. Fate then learns that Mordru had cast two spells. One was the slumber/coma spell and the other was a concealment spell. It wasn't his wife, but Dove, all along. The illusion had fooled everyone.

  • Legionnaires #49 - Senses the energy of the Emerald Eye from a very far distance (light-years, I do believe) and is able to hone in on it and teleport directly to it.

Conclusions

Mordru is one of the most powerful sorcerers in the DC Universe, so what a place for me to start my dive into the mystical side of DC. He's a real interesting character and his history (though confusing) is fun to follow. He's a team buster who is usually beaten via silly plot devices (like the weird weakness he had in the 30th Century, being buried alive) but when he gets to go all out he does some serious damage.

As usual, correct any feats that may be misrepresented or you feel aren't presented in proper context, suggest feats if you have any that aren't included here, and have a great day!

Pretty good RT. There's plenty of detail, plus it's nice to see a separation between him and his 30th century self- it can be quite confusing to tell them apart sometimes.

Nice. Not gonna lie thought this was legion of superheroes version lol. Still great tho

There is some of his stuff from the LOS in the 30th century, there is still a series or two of his I've yet to read (so this is technically incomplete) but I'll be adding more feats this weekend!

EDIT: Added them; one was a planet busting feat, the other was a transmutation resistance showing.

Amazing thread! Mordru is a mystical character that has picked my interested a while back, but there wasn't much about his power-set and general feats, much like the Wizard Shazam.

Thank you!

I haven't done much research into the mystical side of the DCU and was talking to some folks on the battle forums about who I should look into as far as magical characters go. They suggested Mordru and here we are! I couldn't find any good threads for him either, the one on Reddit was from a couple years ago and was really out of context!
