Daredevil Season 1:

"We don't live in a world that's fair, we live in this one. And I'm doing everything I can to make it a better place."

―Matt Murdock

Episode 1: (Into the Ring)

Matt vs Human Traffickers

Context: In Matt Murdock's first fight scene in the series he takes down Turk Barrett and a crew of human traffickers comprised of members from the Russian Mafia.

Feats:

0:37-0:40: Matt knocks down Barrett resulting in him dropping his taser and being knocked out for a short period of time.

0:43-0:48: Matt senses an attacker, dodges and counterattacks, resulting in him dropping said attacker.

0:50-1:03: Matt fights his third opponent in a brief back and forth skirmish

1:04-1:19: Matt fights the previous opponent in a brief back and forth skirmish, eventually taking him out of the fight by breaking his knee.

1:20-1:28: Matt hears Barrett cocking his gun, grabs Barrett's taser and proceeds to use his senses and agility to dodge Barrett's aim.

1:54-1:58: Matt throws the taser at the shipping container, resulting in it ricocheting back to Barrett's head, effectively knocking him out cold.

2:00-2:03: Matt picks up the taser again and tosses it at the last trafficker causing him to fall back into the water.

Matt vs Rance

*Disclaimer: While the following assumption isn't as prominent as it was when the series first came out, I do feel the need to clarify that Rance is NOT some simple fodder opponent. He is a professional assassin. As shown from his moves, pain tolerance, and Wilson Fisk's statement, Rance is not some random thug off the street. Now that this is out of the way...

Context: In this fight scene Matt fights Rance to stop him from murdering his client and potential love interest Karen Paige. After an extended battle, Matt ultimately defeats him.

0:12-0:53: Matt dodges Rance's initial stab and suplexes Rance onto Karen's coffee table. Matt and Rance exchange blows and Matt attempts to flip Rance, which Rance counters in mid-air. Matt gets tackled but gets the upper-hand by kneeing Rance in the back. Once they both get up, Rance charges at Matt but Matt counters and throws him to the wall. Rance attacks again but Matt uses his agility to run off the walls to get behind Rance and put him in a chokehold. Rance tries to break out by elbowing Matt in the sides but Matt doesn't give up.

0:54-1:30: Both Rance and Matt break the window and fall outside. Matt however hits two levels on the way down to the pavement. While it wasn't a full three story drop to the floor, the he hits on the way down shouldn't have been enough to slow down his fall substantially. After a brief flashback into his childhood Matt gets up from off the ground.

1:31-1:35: Matt blocks Rance's knee attack and initially lands a flurry of punches.

1:49-1:51: Matt breaks out of Rance's choke hold and escapes his pin.

2:02-2:20: Matt dodges all of Rance' attacks and lands various blows. Should be noted that Rance tried to surprise him with a knife maneuver (2:12) which Matt senses and dodges.

2:20-2:25: Matt dodges/blocks Rance's attacks, uses a juijustu move which sent Rance to the floor and immediately opts to dislocate his shoulder.

2:35-2:57: Matt senses the chain behind him and decides to use it to incapacitate Rance. After blocking Rance's attack and tying him up with the chain, Matt uses the rest of his energy to promptly beat Rance down with a couple of punches. Matt finishes the fight with a jumping spin-kick to the head resulting in Rance's defeat via knock-out.

Episode 2: (Cut Man)

Hallway Fight Scene

Context: In what is quite possibly the most famous fight scene in the season, Matt confronts the kidnappers despite his extensive injuries (two or three broken ribs, probable concussion, blood loss, several puncture wounds, almost had his lungs collaspe). Sufficed to say Matt wasfar from his best at the time still defeated the kidnappers despite being outnumbered 9 to 1 with a few of them being armed with guns.

Matt immediately throws another guy across the hallway into the wall. Since the fight began we haven't seen Matt take a hit. Matt goes on to fight the remaining six without being tagged until 2:13 when he starts to run out of steam. Matt manages to maneuver them into the other room and briefly fights them off-screen. At 2:26 Matt is tackled out of the room but manages to elbow his attacker in the head twice to escape his grip. Matt dodges the kick of the other goon that left the room and drops him on the floor before knocking him out with two additional punches. Matt then uses a double leg trick technique to hit the last goon before he could get up (2:33). When the both get up Matt punches him, throws him to a wall, punches him twice, blocks his punch, and finishes him off with five final punches.

Episode 3: (Rabbit in a Snowstorm)

1:14-1:43: Despite Healy putting Matt in a hold and attempting to run his head through a spike in the fence, Matt grabs Healy's legs and drops him to the floor. Healy picks up a piece of glass from the shattered mirror but Matt dodges his attacks and quickly uses a grappling move to pin Healy to the ground.

Gonna add some feats for Matt here, been arguing for him a lot lately, might as well do something with the gifs

First off, I got in contact with Chris Brewster (guy who does stunts for Daredevil and Captain America) a while back, asked him how Daredevil compares to other MCU fighters, he had this to say

No Caption Provided

Of course it's nothing super definitive, but at the very least, confirms that Matt's intended to be one of the best

In addition, I think one aspect of Matt that sometimes gets undervalued is his progression throughout DD S1&2.

In S1, Chris Brewster described in an interview how Matt refines his fighting style over the course of the season, going from fighting with his heart to more fighting with his head

http://variety.com/2015/tv/awards/daredevil-stunt-double-chris-brewster-charlie-cox-1201522194/

Then, in S2, Matt progresses even further, becoming "Better, faster, stronger" as a result of having to go up agains the Hand, a higher caliber of opponent

Loading Video...

On that note

Early Daredevil was sometimes criticized for his seeming inability to put down fodder quickly, but by the end of S2, this wasn't a problem for Matt anymore. Once he figured out how to track the Hand ninjas by their breath, his refined technique was more than sufficient to put them down effectively

No Caption Provided

We can also see Matt's improved ability in his later fights with Nobu.

No Caption Provided

When rescuing Stick, Matt was able to borderline stomp the Hand leader.

Matt also showed improvements in being able to fight Punisher

No Caption Provided

Granted, Frank was not in ideal condition for this fight, but Matt was also holding back a ton (all he wanted to do was talk to Frank, who was enraged)

Defenders:

Matt didn't get a ton of stand alone feats from Defenders, but he got feats that are perhaps more important: showings against a number of other established fighters. These are his three most significant fights.

Overall, Matt was portrayed as the best h2h fighter in Defenders (skill-wise, at least), superior to a number of other fighters who are quite formiddable in their own right. This provides some useful scaling for showing just how far Matt has progressed from the beginning of S1 and illustrates the degree to which honing his skills in S2 helped him improve

Some would argue that Matt in Defenders wasn't as good as he was at the end of S2 due to having taken a year off of vigilante work. I can see how that would make sense logically, but it doesn't track with his very impressive Defenders feats, and I'd say his showings are more than enough to say he's at his best in Defenders.

Elektra:

One of Matt's best feats from Defenders comes from his ability to fight the newly resurrected Elektra. Despite her enhanced stats and her weapons advantage, he is able to engage her on even ground for a prolonged period

No Caption Provided

Imo, this fight shows that Matt is at least as skilled as Elektra, if not more so, considering his ability to tag her repeatedly while barely getting tagged in return. The reason he lost this fight was due to Elektra's enhanced strength and durability

This is important because Elektra herself has shown very impressive skill

No Caption Provided

Surrounded, unarmed, by 10 ninjas, Elektra killed all of them in seconds (fighting in the dark, mind you). She disarmed at least one of the ninjas, and apparently remained untagged throughout the fight. It would also appear that she did not move from her starting position, as she's standing in the same spot, facing the same direction, when the lights come back on. This means Elektra was able to fend off 10 simultaneous attackers from all sides, and Matt was still able to match or exceed her

As another interesting note, when talking to Elektra, Alexandra said that, when watching her fight, it was clear that she had learned more than most could learn in a lifetime about fighting

Iron Fist:

Another important fight for scaling Matt is his fight with Danny. While the fight was not totally one sided, Matt did appear to have a clear upper hand, landing more blows on Danny, defending against his attacks better, and overall showing control of the fight.

Danny himself has some very respectable feats, making him useful for scaling Matt

Danny's regularly shown the ability to engage fodder very effectively. He took down an entire room full of Hand fighters, without getting tagged once

Another feat from Danny that I think is helpful for scaling Matt is Danny's ability to beat Murakami

Nobu's boss, Murakami doesn't have very many feats, but he was shown to be quite proficient at fighting superhumans. The way he fought Luke Cage makes me think he could be moderately enhanced himself, but this was never outright stated

Nevertheless, Danny took him down more than once

Matt has his own encounters with Murakami, but never a conclusive 1v1 like Danny had

Bakuto and Murakami:

The last important fight Matt had in Defenders was his 2v1 against Murakami and Bakuto. Both Fingers of the Hand have centuries of experience in combat, and both have shown themselves to be respectable fighters in their own right (Murakami could stomp Jessica and hang with Luke; Bakuto could stomp Colleen when he actually wanted to and, when armed with his katana, was a challenge for Danny 1v1). Despite this, Matt holds his own quite well, at the very least proving himself to be an even match for these two. Personally, I think it could be reasonably argued that Matt had a slight upper hand, but nothing conclusive

Might throw some other random gifs in here later too, as generic showings of physicals/fodder, etc

Added the Season 1 Respect Thread and made some updates. Still a work in progress but I think I could edit it some more to make the Quick Summary Section cleaner and add Defenders material.

@arcus1 Fight scene wishlist for Matt? Do you want them to focus on his skill or physicals?

@arcus1 Fight scene wishlist for Matt? Do you want them to focus on his skill or physicals?

In a perfect world, both.

Realistically, I'm expecting more of a physical focus for at least the early part of the season, so getting some good feats there would be nice (by that, I mean that I expect him to be more powering through fights-similar to the first Hallway fight).

I'm hoping Bullseye will get some good hype, which will then help Matt's skill. I think Defenders laid out how skilled he should be pretty well, and even if he's not physically capable of fighting at that level anymore, I don't want them to forget about that this season (which I don't think they will)

Tbh, I'm hoping for some more stealth fights, at least a couple (like back in S1 when he took out the Russians who had kidnapped Claire, I don't remember any more context for that but it was in a fight compilation video), where he just goes around stealthing guys who know someone's there but can't pin him down

inb4 matt deflects bullets in season 3

Idk if they're gonna have him do that, but it'd be cool. Considering they gave Elektra a bullet timing feat in Defenders, Bushmaster a bullet timing feat in Luke Cage, and Danny a very clear bullet timing feat in S2 (arguably one in S1, but shooting a bullet down is definitely a step up), I wouldn't be all that surprised if Matt pulls something like that off (considering how often he does it in the comics). But I'm not gonna get my hopes up too much

There's no way they'll make Matt a bullet timer lol, only people we've seen doing that so far are metahumans, and some are still iffy.

Matt is a metahuman, strictly speaking

@arcus1: Yes, I've stated that before for his comicbook counterpart, but he's not a metahuman in the physiology sense, like Danny or John or Elektra. He has enhansed senses that potentially help his reactions (because he can sense things the very moment they happen), but actual superhuman speed (by CBM standards) is not something I see him performing. His body/brain is still humans and it has its limits.

In the final fight with Elektra in the cave, Matt held his own 1v1 better than any of the other Defenders. In the first gif, he actually puts her down for a moment, but gets distracted when he hears the bombs. Second one is just him punching her in the face, nothing too special. Third one is him tanking a shot to the face and following it up with a solid knee strike, which staggers Elektra and gives Jess an opening to throw her

By this point, Elektra was at least not looking to kill Matt, so that could help explain why he did better than any of the other Defenders, but his success is consistent with his first fight with Elektra as well. Plus, her not wanting to kill him doesn't make her any weaker physically, so staggering her is still a good showing
