Marvel's Doctor Strange Begins Production -- Main Cast Revealed

We've seen some early shots of Benedict Cubmerbatch as Doctor Strange. Disney and Marvel Studios have announced the movie has officially begun production. Check out the full main cast.

Marvel Studios announced today that production has begun on “Doctor Strange,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch (“Black Mass,” “The Imitation Game”), Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave,” “The Martian”), Rachel McAdams (“Southpaw,” “Sherlock Holmes”) and Michael Stuhlbarg (“Steve Jobs,” “A Serious Man”) with Mads Mikkelsen (“Clash of the Titans,” “Casino Royale”) and Academy Award® winner Tilda Swinton (“Michael Clayton,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel”). The film, which opens in U.S. theaters on November 4, 2016, is directed by Scott Derrickson (“Sinister,” “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”). The film will be shot in several locations around the world, including London, New York, Hong Kong and Kathmandu, Nepal.

“Doctor Strange” follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

“Doctor Strange” is the latest film in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase 3’s goal—over the course of four years and nine films—is to introduce audiences to new heroes and continue the adventures of fan favorites.

Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” is produced by Kevin Feige with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Charles Newirth, Stephen Broussard and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.

Director Scott Derrickson’s creative team also includes director of photography Ben Davis, B.S.C. (Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”); production designer Charles Wood (Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”); costume designer Alexandra Byrne (Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”); editors Wyatt Smith (“Into the Woods,” Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World”) and Sabrina Plisco, ACE (“Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium,” “Charlotte’s Web”); and visuals effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti (Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”).

Based on the Marvel comic character who first appeared in “Strange Tales” Issue 110 published in July 1963, Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” continues the lineage of epic big-screen adventures chronicled in Marvel’s “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “The Avengers,” “Iron Man 3,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Ant-Man” and the upcoming “Captain America: Civil War,” (May 6, 2016), “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” (May 5, 2017) and “Thor: Ragnarok” (November 3, 2017).

Hasn't it been in production for a while? If not then where were all those set pictures coming from?

@g_man: I thought pre-production was just scouting locations and building sets and stuff. Things that didn't need the actual actors to do.

@jonny_anonymous: honestly, not sure. I actually brought up the same question to Mat before I posted. Disney sent out a press release making it official now.

There aren't enough words to describe my excitement.

To me, this is just the official announcement. Disney didn't release those photos of the cast during production, nor did they state that the actors were in it, even though it's obvious. This is just them coming out and saying, "Yes, this is what's happening."

I'm still unsure about the casting choices and direction but Doctor Strange does stand to be a break from the usual MCU mould in uniqueness, tone and type of film/Marvel character to introduce to audiences. It will be interesting to learn more about it if nothing else.

@lvenger: This has one of the best CBM casts of all time. Not sure why you are worried about the cast. Honestly this has the best cast out of any CBM next year by far,

God I'm hoping we get to see Dormammu or Shuma-Gorath later down the road. So much potential

Benedict Cumberbatch is going to be an amazing Stephen Strange and I cannot wait for this movie, I hope the movie villain is either Dormammu or Baron Mordo.

@lone_wolf_and_cub: The sex change in The Ancient One being Tilda Swinton instead of the original Ancient One, who was originally somewhat of a stereotype Asian person and Baron Mordo's change do have some concerns. And there's also the issue of how magic can work in the MCU when the de facto explanation thus far has leaned heavily in super implausible science/sci fi over magic. Asgard is now space aliens rather than a fantasy Norse pantheon, Dr Strange is full on supernatural though.

Hate to be that guy but why is Mordo black now? Is there any real reason as to why they changed the race?

I am a big fan of both Tilda Swinton and Benedict Cumberbatch, and the rest of the cast looks Interesting, Really starting to look forward to this movie.

Hope so, I'm starting to get anxious after no news on that show at all. Iron Fist is one of my favorite characters, I really hope they don't cancel his show.

If it brought something more or different to the character then by all means, change away. Maybe Mordo will have a different backstory.
