Marvel and Sony Partner to Bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe

There's been a lot of rumors flying around that Marvel and Sony were working together in order to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel announced late Monday evening that Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios have struck a deal.

Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.

Sometime before July 2017, fans will finally get to see this new Spider-Man interact with the heroes of the MCU. In addition, Marvel and Sony are looking to intergrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films as well.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is excited for this deal and the future of the MCU:

I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie... Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel's involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.

They continue to call this Spider-Man the "new Spider-Man," but what exactly does that mean? Will Andrew Garfield no longer play the role and will the franchise be getting a reboot again?

More importantly, what film will Spider-Man appear in? Before July 28th, 2017, which is the same day Thor: Ragnarok is slated to release, there are a few other Marvel Studio films coming out: Ant-Man, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2. If we had to put our money on anything, we'd bet it all on Captain America: Civil War, considering how huge a role Spider-Man played in the Civil War event.

Such amazing news. Sad to see Garfield go though, and also bummed about all the Phase 3 movies getting pushed back. But, SPIDER-MAN!!!!!

I would have preferred the Fantastic Four, but hey good for Spider-Man and his fans. As someone who is a fellow die hard fan of a meaningful character, I can understand where you guys are coming from, hopefully some day I can feel the same joy.

I heard a rumor that they were trying to return Spider-Man back to high school age and have an actor play him in that age range.

This will certainly have interesting possibilities behind it. It should be watched though....

Thats what they should do... but twice they have done the 30 yr old guy graduating high school thing.

I'm hoping they don't reboot. Just veer from here on out in the direction they want to go. I'm also hoping Spider-Man's inclusion doesn't mean some other riskier movies are not made for the safe bet of the wallcrawler.

I only care if I get to see miles, the spider women, and black cat. don't care who makes the movies as long as these folks get some shine. as for villains, lets stop with the lex luthoring of the green goblin and lets use some new villains: vulture, kraven, scorpion, etc.

I can't imagine the Civil War storyline without Spiderman, frankly. I'm actually really excited though, to see Spider-man in a movie with other heroes is going to be a nice change that might actually help the perception of the special effects in those films? For some reason the web-slinging just never looked realistic in the movies but perhaps being beside the Hulk and Iron Man might help. Still hoping Andrew Garfield keeps the role though!

Well good that Marvel got Spider-man back though I still don't really care lol. I don't enjoy the Marvel movies that much or even the overload of comic book movies and tv shows nowadays. I do hope they replace Garfield though more or less out of spite. His voice works for the cgi action scenes but every other scene he's in sucks usually cause he's whining or crying. Maybe thats just Spider-Man though.

Wow, I didn't think this would actually come to fruition and perhaps it hadn't if the Sony leak coverage about Spider-man hadn't gotten such positive response. What's interesting is that Amy Pascal was a big victim of that, having had her e-mails distributed fighting with a co-worker. Kevin Feige is an interesting player too, he produced the first 3 X-men movies and has recently praised DOFP quite a bit in the press. I wonder how the performance of this deal will weigh in on Fox's further negotiations with Marvel being that he was very involved with Fox's superhero movies even outside of the X-men.

This may be a shred of hope....
