Martin Freeman Hints at His Role in Captain America: Civil War

Back in May, when Martin Freeman was cast in Captain America: Civil War, the main question on everyone's mind was "who is he playing?" Well, during an interview with BadTaste, Freeman spoke a bit more about his role in the 2016 film.

He works for the American government. He works in conjunction with the superheroes and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes’ power, I suppose. So you’re not quite sure which side he’s on. It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another. It’s the kind of character I like because it’s ambiguous and because you don’t know whether he’s good or bad. I like that area that isn’t black or white, I like the grays, because I think there’s just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.

Back in May, we posed the idea that Freeman could be playing Henry Gyrich, a politician who has worked with superheroes and against them. This character could easily be adapted to someone who plays both sides during the film. So, after everything Freeman recently said, Gyrich is still a possibility for Freeman.

I bet his role will be something similar to Holly Hunter's role in BvS. A politician who will be against the heroes and want them to be accountable for their actions.

That prediction sounds about right to me. If not that specific character then someone like it.

Gyrich would make sense. I am so looking forward to seeing him in this, regardless of who he is.

Seeing him act alongside of Coulson would be so fantastic.

@spideraidan: It can't be Gyrich because he belongs to X-Men. He already made an appearance in the first X-Men movie therefore 20th Century Fox owns Gyrich. There was detail regarding Freeman's constant involvement in the Black Panther movie. It can only mean that Freeman is playing Everett K. Ross.

I hope he plays him like Paul Reiser played Burk in Aliens. Super nice and helpful at first glance but a total a-hole coward when sh** hits the fan.

I believe he first appeared in the Avengers comic. Although he has been a problem for mutants I think he's more of an Avengers character than X-Men.

There was some speculation that he could be Everett Ross and tie in to Black Panther...

I can't tell you how much I hate Burk in that movie, complete a-hole at the end, great character hehe

For some reason, I look at Freeman in context of the Civil War movie, I look at his role, and he sounds like an evil counterpart to Coulson.

As much as it seems like he's going to be Gyrich, It'd make my day if he is introduced as Dell Rusk. If so, I really hope that they are able to keep it under wraps until the movie is released. We don't need to know every detail about a movie before it comes out. Let's go in with a blank slate and enjoy what they have produced.

God this movie is gonna be so badass.
