Here is a little game to play, list any interesting fact that you know about comic books (whether it's from DC, Marvel, Image, Valiant, or the companies as a whole). I'll start first:

Did you know that the original ending to the "Dark Phoenix Saga" was going to be Jean Grey surviving the whole ordeal and just losing her powers? However, Jim Shooter, the editor at the time, wanted Jean Grey to pay for her consequences as the Phoenix, so Chris Claremont had it set up to kill her in the end instead of letting her live.

Mr Sinister was originally supposed to be a psychic manifestation of a little boy from Cyclops orphanage. He aged real slowly and was really old, but still appeared as a little boy. This is evidenced by Mr Sinisters gaudy name and appearance, he is supposed to look like what a little boy would think a "boogeyman" looked like. Gambit was supposed to be an aged clone of the boy, who was supposed to infiltrate and betray the X-Men.

The original main bad guy for Fables was going to be Peter Pan until Willingham realized he couldn't use the character due to rights.

Second Robin Jason Todd's death was decided by a telephone toll: Readers could call a number to vote for him to survive and another one for his death.

Years later it was revealed that some guy programmed his computer to dial the "Death Number" every couple of minutes.

Originally, Batman: The Killing Joke wasn't supposed to be cannon with the Batman universe. But DC loved the story so much that they made it cannon to the point where Barbara Gordon remained paralyzed for most of the Batman stories.

I wonder if the outcome would have been different if it wasn't for that guy...

@xwraith: I do wonder what the X-men books would have been like if Psylocke would have actually died during that arc.

  • The giant coin in the Batcave is not from Two-Face but from a 1940s Batman villain known as the Penny Plunderer.
  • The Joker was inspired by the numerous playing cards that was around Jerry Robinson's house but you can guess which one.
  • Superman's kryptonite was invented by the classic radio show not the comic books
  • The original Superman by Siegal and Schuster (before they changed it obviously) in fact looked like Lex Luthor not the Superman looked today

@lyrafay: actually the joker card thing is a bigger story because he came in to tell them to find that they had already been planing this joker guy for a few weeks as he is really inspired by the silent film the man who laughs ( hence the name of the joker story) kinda like how the film the bat whisperer inspired the costume that finger came up with.

Also kryptonight is from the show but really it was because they needed a reason to have the main voice actor to have a vacation so they had someone else do a sick supes voice but they needed a reason. So while in the office of the writers for the comic they saw a scrapped idea called k- metal I think but so ya that is how it was created cause a guy was bad with orginizing scrapped papers.

Also the penny is from two face as the penny plunderer was written out of continuity.

Yeah, I know that The Man who laughs also inspired the Joker (Its based on a Victor Hugo book, which is extremely sad and tragic book). But I had no idea that the other film, the Bat Whisper. Wasn't The Shadow also an inspiration for Batman too?

@lyrafay: funny story you see the first batman comic detective comics is a copy of a shado story from a year before. However the training abroad thing from the Bronze Age is actually inspired by the shado. Also zorro is the main inspiration also the idea of protégés and a cave came from him that is why we have the mark of zorro as the movie Bruce saw with his parents. Before going into an ally to chill off. Oh I am so morbid.

@dbatdog: speaking of almost origins green goblin might have been a goblin from an Egyptian tomb and the writers making spider woman were walking down a hall about to tell stan the idea for her origin but overheard him telling someone that he is sick of they mixed DNA or mutated with origins or something so the writers changed it.

The Death of Superman wasn't orginally going to happen. The big Superman event of 1993 was to be the wedding of Lois and Clark. However, the higher-ups at DC shot down the idea until Lois and Clark got married on the TV show. One of the writers (I think it was Ordway) threw his hand in the air in exasperation and said "Why don't we just kill him?!"

· The reason Superman was designed with his underwear on the outside is because that's what strong men wore at the time. It also became the design for almost every superhero there after.

· Writer David Micheline originally wrote Venom as a woman. This was changed due to his editor observing that "The readers wouldn't see a woman as a physical threat to Spider-Man."

The original Black Canary was going to be Justice League of America member on Justice League of America Vol 1 #75, but during her past, that would mean that she was too old and then, they replace her with her younger daughter. So the second Black Canary debut for the first time on Justice League of America Vol 1 #75. Later on Crisis on Infinite Earths, the second Black Canary become one of founder members of Justice League of America. And New 52 version Black Canary is Dinah Drake Lance, being the original Black Canary with elements of the second Black Canary.

Knightfall wasn't inspired by The Death of Superman as some people assumed, the Batman writers of the Batman books didn't even know that it was going on when they started Knightfall. And Batman's original first story was inspired by a similar story from The Shadow.

X-23 was created in the animated series "X-Men: Evolution" and this was due to the network wanting to showcase Wolverine more. But Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost wanted to focus on the students, so they decided to create X-23 to be a sort of younger version of Wolverine for the show. X-23 then became so popular that she became a prominent character in the comics.

On no less then four occasions, Green Arrow has been sent back in time to 12th-century England and filled in for an injured Robin Hood.

They all happened in the 40s and 50s.
