The first four films of the MCU were as follows:

  1. Iron Man
  2. The Incredible Hulk
  3. Iron Man 2
  4. Thor

While the first four films of the DCEU were:

  1. Man of Steel
  2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
  3. Suicide Squad
  4. Wonder Woman

Comparing these two franchises at an equal point in their lifespan seems more fair to me than comparing them outright.

That being said, which had a stronger start? The MCU or the DCEU?

I thought spite threads were banned on CV.

I mean, sure. Iron Man 2 was kind of bad. Thor was boring.

But the Incredible Hulk was decent and I don't need to say anything about Iron Man.

I'd still take Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk over any DCEU film so far. Wonder Woman is the only one I can say I liked to a comparable amount, so the answer is no, but barely. Thor and Iron Man 2 were okay films, as are MoS and Suicide Squad.

Well the MCU used characters who were barely household names and a bunch of C-listers while the DCEU used some of the most popular, iconic and well known comicbook characters in the world, excluding Suicide Squad. And even then they had Batman and Joker in Suicide Squad with Joker being one of the most recognizable villains thanks to being a Batman rogue and Heath Ledger. In terms of quality I think Iron Man is better than all of the movies listed above.

@legacy6364: because they used Batman Superman Wonder Woman and Joker all A-B mostly Aslisters while Marvel Used Iron Man a c list character, Captain America also a c list and Thor who is debatable and Hulk was the only A lister marvel had.

Nope

Iron Man was great, Thor was pretty good, IM2 and Incredible Hulk were okay.

WW was great, MoS was good, BvS was boring, SS was trash

MCU wins

And the only reason the DCEU has more gross than the first few mcu films is because the mcu made CBM's mainstream and paved the way for audiences. Also add to the fact DCEU opened with two of the most popular characters in fiction throughout the world.

The better comparison would be comparing phase 1 of the mcu to DCEU up to when Justice League comes out as MCU is missing Cap 1 and Avengers 1

MCU will still win unless JL is outright amazing and revolutionary

No. The MCU introduced the characters individually and their first crossovers felt natural. With DC BVS felt forced.

It's hard to say. While Iron Man 2 and Incredible Hulk are rarely on anyone's favorites list (I think there are a lot of people who forget the Incredible Hulk is an MCU movie), BvS and Suicide Squad both suffered notoriously from studio over-interference and cutting out things they shouldn't have, with only the extended cut of BvS helping the movie save some face.

Plus the bar for comic book movies is higher now, so it is more of an uphill battle than Marvel had back when Iron Man came out. I like most of the DCEU movies but I hate when people say "Well, if BvS or Suicide Squad came out before the MCU then nobody would have had a problem with them." Yeah, well, them didn't. The bar has been raised and we should try to make new movies at that level or past it. That's why, even though the Christopher Reeve's Superman and Tim Burton Batman are still beloved today, we don't keep trying to make movies just like them.

@jonez_: I'll put it like this. With the exception of IM1, I haven't watched a Phase one movie more than once. I've watched MoS and BvS separately over a dozen times.

Money wise, the DCEU grossed much more in the box office. Source: Box Office Mojo

  • Iron Man = Worldwide: $585.174.222
  • Incredible Hulk = Worldwide: $263.427.551
  • Iron Man 2 = Worldwide: $623.933.331
  • Thor = Worldwide: $449.326.618

Total = US$1.921.861.722 Worldwide

  • Man of Steel = Worldwide: $668.045.518
  • BvS = Worldwide: $873.260.194
  • Suicide Squad = Worldwide: $745.600.054
  • Wonder Woman = Worldwide: $571.801.730

Total = US$2.858.707.496 Worldwide

However, we have to take in consideration some things. The first MCU movies, except for the Incredible Hulk, were completely based off on C-list characters such as Iron Man and Thor. While the first DCEU movies were based off on A-list characters, with the exception of Suicide Squad (which had Joker and Batman as A-list characters), with characters such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Taking in consideration that the MCU was able to pull off such a big number with "unknown" characters (funny thing is: their A-list character movie, The Incredible Hulk, was the one which grossed the least), it might be debatable wheter the DCEU has a better start money-wise or the MCU had a better start money-wise. Box Office-wise is not debatable, the DCEU movies grossed the highest.

Quality-wise is pretty much to each one's opinion, if that's the case of this thread, then the title should have been "Do you think the DCEU is off to a better start than the MCU?". Well, to my mind, their both on par with each other. Man of Steel is one of my favourite CBMs, while Wonder Woman was great. BvS and Suicide Squads were both let downs for me. In the case of the MCU, Iron Man is one of my favourite CBMs of all time, while The Incredible Hulk was fun. Thor and Iron Man 2 were just bad, IMO. So, to my mind, they're both on par with each other.

Absolutely. Sure Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman weren't perfect, but they were miles above Iron Man 2, Thor, and the Incredible Hulk. And Man of Steel and Wonder Woman were both better movies than Iron Man. So yeah, I'd say the DCEU is off to a much better start.

As far as quality goes, personally, I say they are about even; I have Iron Man and MoS about the same, IM2 and BvS cancel each other out, Incredible Hulk > Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman > Thor

Money wise? Have no idea. My bank account doesn't see a dime of these movies earnings, so I typically don't know much about or follow dollar figures these things pull in...all I do know is that they make a sh!t ton of bread

2. Iron Man

3. WW

4. BvS

5. Thor

6. Incredible Hulk

7. Suicide Squad

8. Iron Man 2

Nah..MCU wins. Barely. I don't know about the Box-Office numbers really being in the DCEU's favor, because I don't know how much each movie cost to make and market. The important thing is profit margin, not just Box-Office dollars. (Same applies to comics where Marvel, even recently, always seems to "win", but my understanding is DC is winning the profit margin game in comics.) As for quality....and my personal opinions. I'd rank them:

1. Iron Man. I want to say WW, but I think that's still the high from having it be a recent view. My gut feeling says a year from now, I'll like Iron Man more.

2. WW.

3. MoS

4. Thor

5. IM2

6. BvS

Didn't see either Incredible Hulk or SS.

So..it may look even and the tie-breaker for me is razor thin, but here it is: I still think I'll see The Incredible Hulk someday. (maybe even soon). I have zero interest in SS. Also, the MCU's real heavy hitters are creeping around the corner after their first 4. And while I know that's not part of the question, we all know for the DCEU to pass up the MCU, JL will have to be amazing. I, for one, do not have much faith in the JL movie. (Though I do think Aquaman will be great...for some reason.)

The way I'd rank the 8 movies-

  1. Wonder Woman
  2. Iron Man
  3. Batman v Superman
  4. Man of Steel
  5. The Incredible Hulk
  6. Thor
  7. Iron Man 2
  8. Suicide Squad

Last 3 are interchangeable.

Best to Worst

  1. Iron Man (No contest)
  2. Man of Steel (Krypton was cool, destruction porn though)
  3. Incredible Hulk (Abomination)
  4. Thor (Kat)
  5. Wonder Woman (Vastly Overrated)
  6. Iron Man 2 (Bad)
  7. BvS Dawn of Justice (Garbage Tier)
  8. Suicide Squid (Garbage Tier)

In terms of success, MCU. Taking a group of lesser-known heroes (outside of Hulk) and making them into critical and financial successes was a great start for the movie.

In terms of my personal preference?

Wonder Woman > Thor > BvS > Man of Steel > Iron Man 2 > The Incredible Hulk > Iron Man > Suicide Squad

Avatar image for thorthunder98

People need to remember DC aren't too great with their profits

BvS grossed $900M+ but only profited $105M when even Ant-Man profited nearly that much at $103.9M

Suicide Squad actually profited more than BvS with $158M and MoS profit wasn't high at all either at $42.7M

MCU gets quite a bit more profit from their films generally compared to DCEU

I couldn't find the profits for those specific mcu films but here's some other comparisons of profits

@jonez_: I feel like Thor is a vastly underrated movie. It was actually pretty good in what it did, which was intoduce a completely new side of the MCU.

The early MCU movies were better made IMO (for majority, with some exceptions) some of the stuff that the DCEU did was cooler though, but I blame that on them starting later.

  2. Wonder Woman
  3. Man of Steel
  4. The Incredible Hulk
  5. Batman v Superman
  6. Thor
  7. Suicide Squad
  8. Iron Man 2

IMO, The Incredible Hulk with Ed Norton and Liv Tyler is very underrated. I really like that movie.

More or less even but I would give MCU the slight edge. Suicide Squad was just so mind-numbingly bad that it brings the DCEU down.

If Suicide Squad had been a match for Iron Man 2, the DCEU comes out ahead. If we give the films values this is how I see them;

MoS: 8

BvS: 6.5

WW: 7.5

SS: 3

Total of 25.

Iron Man: 8

Incredible Hulk: 7

Thor: 6

Iron Man 2: 6

Total of 27.

I'm not sure

I would say Iron man > Man of Steel

The Incredible Hulk < BVS

Iron Man 2 > Suicide Squad

Thor = Wonder Woman (I don't know why but I absolutely love Thor but I can recognize that wonder woman is the better directed and realized movie.)

The Incredible Hulk: 6/10

Iron Man 2: 6.5/10

Thor: 7.5/10

Total: 25

DCEU:

Man of Steel: 6/10

BvS: 6.5/10

SS: 3/10

WW: 10/10

Total: 26
