The clone saga , onslaught , red & blue superman
Is the 90's the worst era of comics ?
It was called the Dark Age because of it's focus on dark gritty characters and stories.
but I think that coincidentally it also shared some similarities with the real world Dark Ages...
My collection goes from the 70's (unfortunately, not many from that era, they're actually worth something.) to the present day (With small gaps here and there from when I had no money). I would say the 90's are probably the worst era, but all eras have good stuff/bad stuff.
The 90's had it's good points also. We got Rob Liefield which is kinda bad, but we also got Cable, Deadpool, Supreme and Others. The 90's gave us Image Comics, which gave us Spawn, Savage Dragon and Pitt. Valiant which gave us The Harbingers and Bloodshot. Ninjak and Dr Solar. It gave us Malibu, which gave us Nightman, Prime, Mantra, and The Dinosaurs for Hire. It gave us Static, Icon and Rocket. Deathshead had a comic, So did Deathlok. I mean I enjoyed it.
@guardiandevil83: You said Rob Liefeld was bad, and then you said Cable and Deadpool were good things, they were both created by Liefeld.
NO it definitely was not the worst Era in comics
the worst era in comics was -∞ to the 1930s (this era is shorter if you include comic strips)
I would say no. The 90's had some of the greatest storylines ever. This includes Knightfall, Infinity Gauntlet and The Death of Superman. It also introduced the Thunderbolts, X-Force and War Machine (the armor, not James Rhodes). There may have been some bad stuff, but there was some good stuff to.
Anything good in the 90s was drowned out by Rob Liefeld and Rob Liefeld wannabes splurging things with terrible art, adolescent attempts to be "XTREEEEEEEEM", nonsensical storylines, books filled with guns, cannons, and more guns, all sense of artistic proportion was lost, all the joy in comics was sucked out for stupid attempts at Grimdark, and generally everyone tried too hard to be judge dredd.
Thank the gods for Kingdom Come showing us how terrible the 90s antihero was and spelled the end of that cocaine fueled, exploitive, poorly drawn, and overall just insultingly stupid era.
It was the Dark Ages for a reason.
90s was more about trying to get sales than anything else. thats why it was dark ppl got new looks and characters"died". 2 great 90s things tho is wally as flash and kyle as green lantern. you also have knightfall death of superman emerald twilight and age of apocalypse. 90s got me back into dc but away from marvel.
I mean, look at Linkara's review of the first arc of youngblood.
Youngblood IS the 90s as far as comic books are concerned.
That was what the average comic book in the dark age was like.
Turn off your rose tinted nostalgia goggles because they're only letting you see a few gems in an ocean of turds.
This is the worst era in comics.
2010+ has been abominable.
Nah, this is one of the best. Availability getting better; old material getting reprinted, new formats for reading (digital) and independent stuff getting noticed and having lots of quality stuff.

I love 90's comics. Image is a great example of how awesome they were.
You clearly never read Youngblood. Or the Clone Saga. Or Superman At Earth's end. Or the Crossing. Or Red and Blue superman. Or anything written or drawn by rob liefeld. Or anything made by his flunkies.

I didn't want to get into Rob Liefeld. I don't like to insult artists, because it's hard to do what they do.
Honestly the 50s or 70s might have been worst.
Are you tripping? Silver Ages for the win.
I'd say that the 90's failed pretty badly.

Rob Liefeld suffered from a lack of talent, he certainly was enthusiastic, but just didn't have the skill to match it. He did have a lot of energy though, given that he at times seemed to be drawing half of everything.
Actually we are currently in the worst era for comics.
Please continue to state your opinion as fact without backing it up.
@guardian_of_gravityI never said it was fact, I simply stated my opinion. If you don't agree with me that's fine but quit trying to pick a fight over nothing.
My favorite era of comics is from the 90's. Personally, I love red and blue super man and the clone saga. They arn't the best stuff out there, but I enjoyed them! The 90's also had a lot of other stuff that was really good too. This isn't me just looking back "on the good 'ol days either". Being born in the 80's I read a few comics in them 90's, but only a few and never really cared about them. Now as an adult my comic collection spand threw every comic era, and I know people will flip out but my favorite comic to read are modern era comics, most of all I've noticed I like comics made in the 90's.
90's comics get way too much hate!
@arturocalakayvee: I liked a lot of stuff that happened in the 90s, they had some of the best X-men story arcs, Fatal Attractions, X-ecutioner's song, Age of Apocalypse, some of the best comic events, like the Infinity Guantlet, Infinity War, Acts of Vengence. Sure the art went a little wacky what with the oversized guns and pouches over man boobs and women that logically shouldn't have been able to walk upright but as far as writing and character development goes the 90s was doing way better than it is now.
I think the 90's didn't have the worst comics, but they did had some of the worst comic fans...... You want to know why Rob Liefeld was big in the 90's, because people bought 10 copies of his $#!% thinking they were going to get rich.........
@judasnixon: It wasn't actual fans it was idiot collectors that didn't understand the basic supply and demand principal, you know the rule that states the more of a commodity that exists, the less its actual value. So pretty much the whole reason the market bottomed out and those people got nothing from there investment was them buying them in abundance causing the companies to make tons more.
@chronus: not even this?
For the young uns, that's Wolverine being completely owned by Magneto and screaming in horrible agony.
@joshmightbe: You mean my Rob Liefeld's Young Bloods trading cards aren't worth $#!%........
Honestly, the 90s had some good stuff, but it was outweighed by the bad stuff. Overall, not a decade to really look back fondly on.
@wolverine08: Lets be honest here that is the absolute most likely outcome of Wolverine and Magneto having a fight when they're both going for the kill.

If you don't say "I think" or "In my honest opinion" or something to that effect I will assume that you are asserting a fact and harass you for it. It's like my #7 pet peeve. 6 being Rob Liefeld and 5 being Frank Miller.

I'll say it's fact.
This is the worst era of (big two) comics.
that was one of the best eras to read comics. the great outweigh liefeld. nowdays most comics are mediocre at best with recycled stuff from, guess when. you'll never guess. THE 90s.

The unitalicised has nothing to do with the quality of current comics, and that's what the thread is about. Transport modern technology to the nineties and it suddenly gets better?
@guardian_of_gravity: Its an opinion thread, it should be implied that I was stating an opinion. Any time you see the words Best or Worst that isn't connected to something actually quantifiable is always an opinion. If I say the Beetles were the best band ever that is a statement of opinion because I can't speak on the quality of every band that has ever existed, nor could I qualify any particular era of comics the worst as a matter of fact because it is totally an opinion question.
My 90's experience is mostly Batman,so for me no it wasn't even close to being the worst.
We had O'Neil,Dixon,Grant,Rucka,Moench,Breyfogle,Aparo,Nolan,Balent etc working on the various Batman group titles.I'd say this stands alongside the late 80's and late 2000's as easily one of the best Batman periods. The only thing that resembled Liefeld's work was JPV's Azbats armor and thankfully it was intended to be a satire.
Superman was bad though,I liked some of the Cyborg Superman stories(and even they went downhill later) and that's really it.
My opinion of comics is generally the same as Linkaras.
The 90s were terrible with bad plots, poor writing, the worst art to have ever befouled my eyes, some of the lamest characters to have ever been created and should die in a fire. Thankfully Kingdom Come put the 90s in their place.
Frank Miller is a crazed sexist, racist, conservative loon.
There is a time and place for fanservice, when the plot should be taking focus is neither of them.
Rob Liefeld is not an artist, he is a manchild with pencils.
Brodsky is a hack and should be strung up.
People's opinions of other eras are as always, coloured because they only remember the best bits of it, when you objectively look back into them you'll see that they're all pretty much as crappy as now.
You see, the ratio of good to bad has always been 1 to 10. For every one comic worth reading, there have always been ten that sucked. For every one good comic, there were ten that were just worth reading. For every one great comic there were ten that were just good. For every one comic that is just bad, there are ten that are unspeakably awful.
This has been a fundamental aspect of creative works and indeed, everything since the dawn of time.
The good are always drowned in a sea of terribleness.
The dark ages are named as such because the primary theme was juvenile shock value and failed attempts at edginess.
