Poll Is Spiderman overrated as a character? (194 votes)

Absolutely. You should see the fanboy debates I have with Spider wankers on this forum alone. Uninformed people are probably worse. Not to mention the writers that try to appeal to this irrational wank fest and proceed to write Spider-Man as beating someone out of his weight class.
No he really is just that effing good. Seriously, you could count the number of bad runs he's had with one hand and still have enough fingers to be able flip off someone who says he's overrated.
He rated right where he belongs at number 1. He outsells any other comic superhero by a large margin. His only real competition is Batman. You don't have to like him but to say he's overrated is factually wrong seeing as how much he sells merch and how most people love him.
@lone_wolf_and_cub: This is a personal opinion type poll. Merchandising doesn't really have anything to do with it since many people who buy his merchandise are likely ignorant of comics in general.
@noone301994: sorta like Batman huh? Definitely overrated then.
@wavemotioncannon: Absolutely.
more overrated than Batman definitely
Nobody is more overrated than Batman.
I decided to read some old issues of Spider-Man I had. omg he is the most unbelievable passive aggressive @$$hole in the MCU, the way he acts towards his peers, his boss, his fellow heroes. it's unbelievable.
The character needs to be retired. His story was basically over when Steve Ditko left, and overlong by the time Lee left. Spidey reached the second of the two righteous epiphanies that bookended his coming of age in Ditko's last issue on the book. Everything after that has been necessary only for Marvel's profit as they leech off the creativity of decades past. And this is coming from someone who grew up with Spider-man and whose favorite CBM is Spider-man 2. That said, the original Lee-Ditko run was one of the most important comics of all time, so...he is appreciated, but for the wrong reasons.
Not even close. Great superhero there is.
nah ,he's legit the best hero ever
more overrated than Batman definitely

In reality, as of now, Batman is currently the most underrated superhero.
Everyone seemed to piss on his character all the time on this forum.
@darthmummy: If that's the case every character needs to be retired since that can be applied to almost every superhero.

I couldn't deal with them ending it at the end of Ditko, the end of Stan Lee maybe (~#98 would've been a good ending), but not Ditko. The Green Goblin's identity would not have been known, we would have been left in the dark about Mary Jane, there would be no Kingpin, no Robbie Robertson, no "Spider-Man No More", none of the 60s student protest issues would've happened etc etc.
That's like asking if Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny are overrated. As a literary and pop culture character he is certainly not overvalued. Now, as for that esoteric battle forum stuff popular on this site, well I can't say since it doesn't interest me at all.

great answer.
What does overrated even mean on here? From my understanding, it's when a ton of people, the majority, like something one person/ or a few people do not. The idea of it being popular for good reasons is insane, so it's now overrated.
He is valued and popular, each person has their own reason to like him. The battles I am starting to avoid more and more.
No. But you know who absolutely is? Batman. One of the most boring, overrated heroes I have ever read. His stories are for the most part bland.
Jesus Christ, did Batman shit in everyone's mailbox. This thread had nothing to do with him yet about 1/3 of the post here unnecessarily mentions him. If you can't even put overrated in the title of a thread without people just itching to mention Bruce, can you really call him overrated?
Spidey is the world's greatest superhero - there's no way he is overrated.
No. Best superhero.
Obviously not, even a Spider-Man thread has 1/3 posts about Batman. Batman> rest noobs and dont you forget it. Joking lol.
To the OP NO, people like him, others should just get over it.

I usually don't say this, but Haters gonna hate.
People love to hate on Batman cause he's more popular than their favorite hero.
@entropy_aegis: What exactly am I supposed to "get over" exactly? Maybe you need to get over my asking the question in the first place or else just ignore the thread completely. Its a simple question. There are many reasons to consider Spiderman a bit overrated as a character. If you disagree that is fine but there is absolutely nothing for me to get over due to posing the question.

So be it!

I'm okay with dropping all of that, except maybe "Spider-man No More"...Does it really add anything I wonder, or is it just another "Yes, Pete, you have a responsibility to help everyone you can. Remember that this time"?
@w0nd: I'm talking about as a character. Do you see him as an interesting or cool character to read about relative to other characters you like to justify his overall popularity level?
I honestly do, I find some of the issues that people hate mostly is who writes him, and they aren't shy about letting everyone know...when a good writer has control people praise it. but over all I think his popularity is justified
I never found Spiderman to be an overrated character I always thought he was an underappreciated character when it came to appeal and accessibility his comic book canon is very impressive if you are to look way back and if you are to look at it now. Spiderman isn`t just comic relief he has stories that could rival Batman`s darkest days as the World`s Greatest Detective.
