Well it depends what you like, there are lots of things to watch. I guess I would put Mad Men among the recommended things to watch. Here is a few selection of great things to watch:

  • Twin Peaks <- probably the 7th best
  • The West Wing <- The best serie ever
  • United States of Tara <- probably the second best serie of all times
  • Dexter
  • Weeds (season 1-2)
  • Dr House
  • Deadwood
  • The Newsroom
  • Oz
  • The Sopranos <- probably the 3rd best ever
  • House of Cards (season 1)
  • Sucession
  • The Wire <- probably the 4th best serie ever
  • True Detective <- season 1 being the 5th best and the best detective serie ever
  • How to get away with murder season 1
  • Fargo
  • American Horror Stories <- 2nd season probably the best of the serie
  • Enlightened
  • Breaking Bad
  • Hell on Wheels
  • Luther <- I love this one
  • Sherlock <- I love this one
  • Broadchurch
  • Downton Abbey <- probably the 6th best serie of all times
  • Life on Mars (uk) <- I love this one
  • Six Feet Under <- I love this one
  • 24h
  • Mad Men

Depends on what you like. It's more character driven than story driven. Pitch meetings, day drinking, affairs with random women, office secrets, corporate takeovers. Those are the kind of story lines you'd be in for. It's more about the relationships between the characters and their growth (or lack thereof) than anything else. Some great one liners over the years too.

@jb681131: The lack of Twilight Zone on a list of the best shows is disturbing.

Jon Hamm's character Don Draper plays a more comic Tony Stark on there, then RDJr ever did.

I sayd "here is a few selection". And twilight zone is a bit dated.

Yes and No. Sometimes you think you don't like a genre because you haven't seen a great one of it's kind yet.

@jb681131: The date of the show doesn't change the fact that its superior to the majority of shows aired today.

You're correct but jb was clearly saying that they were recommending relatively newer stuff worth watching.

They might not have specified that originally but they did in their second. No need to be overly pedantic.

The main character is an ad man named Don Draper who comes up with pitches for various products in order to convince companies to hire the ad agency he works for to come up with ideas for them to potentially use in advertisements for their product. Draper is actually a deserter of the Korean War who accidentally killed his superior officer with a grenade and has taken on his identity. He's also an orphan who happened to grow up in a whorehouse. These aspects of his character cause him to develop a very specific personality and view of the world that leads to many of his successes and problems throughout the series. I would say Mad Men is among the greatest television series of all time, within the top 3 for live action. I highly recommend it.
