Poll Is Leonardo DiCaprio the Best Actor of the 21st Century? (35 votes)

Only taking into account actors who are currently under the age of 60.

Is Leonardo DiCaprio the greatest of them all? He's shown great range and is the highlight of most films he's in. He's been nominated for Best Actor 5 times (more than any other actor currently under 60) and won once - though many believe he's been snubbed on a few occasions.

@finner: We'll see how it goes, Leo is much younger than Hanks, we'll compare Leo to the Hanks now by the time he's Hanks's age.

He’s in the top five and I agree with Skywalker‘s picks. However they’re all so close (less so Gosling) in ability that it’s difficult to nigh impossible to pick who the number 1 is. You could make a convincing argument for all of them.

You could just say, best living actor under 60, lol.

And nah. Although looking at the names mentioned here, it makes me wonder how many famous, male film actors under 60 are truly “exceptional”. It hadn’t occurred to me before that every one of my top picks is a pretty old fellow.

I have a hard time not seeing Leo in his roles. I think Tom Hardy can morph into someone else more convincingly.

Nope, Joaquin Phoenix. He gave both of the two best performances of the past decade (The Master and Joker). Add his performances in Gladiator and Walk the Line, and it isn't even a question for me.

He's a solid contender for number two though. I honestly can't decide between him and Christian Bale for 2nd place.

I have a hard time not seeing Leo in his roles. I think Tom Hardy can morph into someone else more convincingly.

  • What's Eating Gilbert Grape
  • The Departed
  • Blood Diamond
  • Django Unchained
  • The Wolf of Wall Street
  • The Revenant

No trace of DiCaprio in any of these roles, he completely becomes the character, especially in Gilbert Grape and Django.

Are you the same person who called Nolan the best director ?

That said Leo has a very fair chance at this. He’s definitely up there.

He’s good, but not the best in my opinion. I’d give that to Denzel, Bale, Phoenix, McConaughey.

OP said under 60 so I guess Denzel and Hanks are out of it.

Jake Gyllenhaal takes the cake for me this Century

Yes but he doesn't change as well as Tom Hardy or Daniel Day Lewis - and he does none of his big stunts and fights.

To me "Gilbert Grape" is by far still his best role.

@jb681131: Doesn't change? Have you even seen Django Unchained, Blood Diamond, The Departed, WoWS, Revenant? He's completely different in all of those roles. And what does him not doing his own stunts and fights have to do with his acting?

He's got the same mimics and tics in all his roles. And in all the roles you name, he has the same types of roles. Always a hard/Tough guy, a man with convictions.

But I didn't say he didn't change at all, I sayd he doesn't change as well/much as Tom Hardy or Daniel Day Lewis.

And not doing your stunts/fights means their are some roles he'll never play, limiting his versatility.
