Is DC losing the culture war against Marvel and if so, how does that impact the future for comics?

First off, this is truly not meant to be antagonistic as I have a neutral allegiance to either company from a comic-book standpoint (just started reading comics in general). However, I think it's hard to argue that MCU is putting out better movies so much that they've pretty much redefined the modern blockbuster while the DCEU, to put it kindly, isn't really contributing as much in the zeitgeist. https://19216811.cam/https://1921681001.id/

It's not so much the current standings, which seems to be only slightly in favor towards Marvel, but I'm considering more about the future standings. I gotta imagine the MCU is creating way more fans for Marvel Comics than DCEU is for DC Comics. Not to mention with the power of Disney distribution behind Marvel IP.

So, 10 years from now, where do you DC and Marvel comic market shares to be?

There is literally no culture wars.

But the culture war, if it were actually a thing, is that the people like TheQuartering, Ben Shapiro, geeks+gamers etc are losing the war.

There's definitely some culture war at play. She Hulk has very deseevingly been criticized for its social takes (cringe show).

you changed subject from dc/marvel to personally biased american politics lol, the truth is that the united states in general is declining as a country altogether and pretty much everyone can observe this, there is virtually nobody who is afraid or even respects americans anymore and both from societal standards (it has the highest divorce rates and most dysfunctional families, and depression and suicides have skyrocketed) and from economic standards (it has the most homeless people and highest inflation, and their military got crushed in afghanistan) the usa has reached a dead end that is irreversible

it is just that conservative commentators like ben shapiro and matt walsh exploit this for personal reasons in order to make money off of it, they are basically ridiculing the typical insane unscientific western liberals on their shows (those who for example say theres more than 2 genders or that the world is being destroyed by climate change etc) and they become popular through it, they are basically using the death of western europe/north america culture as their own way to become rich,

Culture War is a nonsense discourse

Setting that aside this isn't anything new, Marvel has always been more dominant in cultural landscape and DC in accordance always tried to brand itself as the more mature one. The character portfolio of Marvel is far more diverse in terms of resonating with non-comic book following, general audience (X-men, Spiderman, Hulk, Ironman etc.) meanwhile DC has always been carried by Superman and Batman whose mythos Marvel can't emulate.

Its no surprise that Marvel dominates DC in box office however comic book industry itself is basically a non-entity in terms of economic size and mainstream series are mostly kept alive on a life support (can't blame anyone this is a hole they dug themselves) for providing source material for much bigger sectors like movies and video games.

lmao, outside of small neckbeard weeb internet circles nobody has even heard of anime or manga, even those who know of anime in real life only know the basic classic ones like dragon ball, naruto, pokemon and avatar (which is not an anime but they place it there), an average person who sees it thinks its weird cartoons

also an example, spiderman no way home by itself has made more revenue than the entire history of anime and manga combined, and this is just one movie which is not even close to the highest grossing marvel movies, realistically speaking anime and manga has never been even close to other mediums and it is not getting anywhere either because the big classic series are mostly over

in videogame sector as well, just the batman arkham series alone have made more revenue than all anime games combined (and now theres also suicide squad and gotham knights which take place in arkhamverse), moreover square enix marvel videogames (avengers and guardians of the galaxy) made more revenue than their final fantasy etc (but final fantasy is not anime anyway, just trying to show the impact of marvel however

in fact even in japan anime is a very niche thing and it is considered nerdy for social rejects, and the overall impact of anime on culture has declined ever since the big classic ones (dragon ball, naruto, bleach, one piece etc) which is also why no anime or manga is as big or relevant as them anymore and are limited to tiny internet circles and then disappear

You look at DC Comics lately? They're publishing their cringe takes recently. Some of the newer stuff has been cool, but it has mostly been crap.

She-Hulk show is what happens when you let writers removed from reality try to pretend like they can connect to people they've never met. It'll keep happening as long as people assure Marvel that it can't fail.

There literally most certainly isn't a culture war. And if it were, DC and Marvel would be on the same side, and winning the culture war.

Though there isn't a culture war.

OP wanted to say how Marvel & DC became cultures themselves and Marvel has become more iconic and popular in last decade while DC is losing in both cinema and comics and has become less relevant in indistury but due to someone's misinterpreting this thread turned to Youtube comment section about Wokeness

Not a battle, I really don't get how DC keeps fumbling.

The DCAU was already an amazing cross-franchise universe. They could just copied it.

DC lost when the MCU became a thing DC has always dominated the animation side of thing but the MCU made Ironman Thanos and Thor household names to where even non comic viewers recognize them.

Not a "culture war" at all. Neither Marvel nor DC in any way had a major impact on the lives of people outside of on-screen entertainment.

Should've picked "entertainment/franchise competition".

Don't bring politics into what's supposed to be mind-numbing entertainment.

I mean yeah of course Marvel is dominating they have no real rivalry or beef with D.C neither does the latter, both of the greedy fat corps just want more of the green in their pockets for this currency that has no true value.

Marvel overall "won" at the Infinite War/Endgame movies, and because the original Justice League was really bad in comparison to the Jack Snyder Extended Edition version

but cinamoroll is still superior

yeah its still always only like the typical 4-5 anime that people have heard of, attack on titan, dragon ball, hero academia and naruto, and that is mostly because they have been commercialized amongst other stuff, there is some good plot in the demon slayer and it was really sad when gyutaro was cursing buddha and other gods when he was desperate, but at least there was a somewhat good ending for him and his sister as they reunited together after passing away

although cinamoroll is superior

Marvel need to understand that majority of their fanbase are males and they are antagonising them with their latest projects.

Disney seem to have forgotten the entire reason they brought Marvel is to reach male audience

I like both companies but i have said from day one DC screwed up big time. Their biggest mistake was in rushing to copy marvel's shared movie universe. Marvel just had too much of a big head start. DC should have focused on stand alone films at first and then, over time, start doing group films. BvS should have been man of steel 2 for example.

I don’t believe Disney/MARVEL Studios is putting out content that is that much better than DC currently to be honest. I find the quality level to be about the same going by recent content from both really. The big difference is while the DCEU stuff is hit and miss, Warners still has a “The Batman” in their back pocket that solos both the recent DCEU and MCU releases from a quality standpoint point as far as I’m concerned. I honestly feel like Disney/MCU get a pass on recent content because they’ve built up a brand based on their releases from years past, not because Phase 4 is full of legit high level critical darling pieces.

There was a point in time where DC was so insanely crushing Marvel that it wasn't even close. From the 70's until 2012, 4 decades of dominance. Its not that big of a deal that Marvel is currently "winning". They put out more movies, and nearly half of them were bad.

DC Movies still make money. They aren't going to stop making them. If you made 1 Mil a year at your job, and your buddy makes 2 Mil a year, yeah hes making twice as much as you, but turns out 1 Mil a year is still juuuuuuust fine. :-P

It doesn't or at the very least not in large enough numbers to matter at least

OT: marvel has more likeable characters, but dc (& it's various imprints) has always had better stories (imo) FYI I'm talking strictly about comics NOT movies

Marvel stumbled upon something that worked for two generations. The generation of people who were ridiculed for reading and loving comics, and the generation that have put comics in the mainstream. The generation that was ridiculed is the ones that created it, too.

They did it organically through a slow build, working in established heroes that people were familiar or at least vaguely familiar with, pulling in a small audience at first, culminating with the most successful movie franchise ever.

WB/DC tried to harness the lightning in a bottle in four movies—Man of Steel, BvS, Wonder Woman, and Justice League.

Why one won over the other is the great mystery of success vs failure, and it happens everywhere.

WCW vs WWE, Apple vs Microsoft, Coke vs Pepsi, Facebook vs MySpace, MCI vs AT&T, Star Wars vs Star Trek, Ford vs General Motors, Nike vs Reebok, BMW vs Mercedes, etc. I’ve barely scratched the surface.

Of course we all have theories on why one is more successful than the other, but we don’t really know or companies would duplicate the it constantly.

In ten years, I’d say Marvel will still be leading handily, though I prefer DC overall.
