Is DBZ ACTUALLY one of the best animes ever?

Hell yeah! I don't really watch anime but DBZ, Death Note and Naruto and a couple of others are my exception.

In terms of quality, it's not even a great anime. But in terms of impact and growing the medium outside of Japan it's very important to the genre.

Yes it is. And i've watched the best,Trigun,Inuyasha,Naruto,Lupin the the 3rd,Fullmetal Alchemist,Bleach,One Piece ETC.

And in my opinion, Dbz trumps all of them. Pretty much all of my friends agree.

Nostalgia googles, I liked it as a small child but I am fully aware now DBZ isn't a very weak show.

This isn't an opinion, it's not elements that one person enjoys and another could like, it had intentional flaws in the storytelling and presentation in order to milk the original premise for all it was worth.

DBZ is in the top three worst anime I've ever seen. I don't really like watching hours of fighting. Especially when the fighting scenes aren't even that good.

The show has many problems. It started off alright, but as it went on it just became worse and worse.

In terms of shonen anime/manga. JoJo, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, Saint Seiya (despite still not having finished it) over DBZ, One Piece and Naruto any day. Now DBZ isn't bad and its extremely influential but JoJo is influential to as well but just in terms of all anime/manga in general.

Not just shonens

A lot I prefer over DBZ (Death Note, Monster, 20th Century Boys, stuff I listed above and other stuff etc) also besides just original anime and manga adaptations. There are also visual novels and light novels but those I put in fav written works

But Kara No Kyoukai, Fate Zero and Higuarshi are pretty great adaptations of their source material and great anime. I'd also list Baccano and Durarara buuuut as they are well adapted to, they just end wayyyy to early as the books are 20 volumes long in Baccano's case and 12 in Durarara's

Anyway I'm rambling.

DBZ is still extremely influential and I'm glad it inspired many people and entertained many also best is simply an opinion at the end of the day.

There are a few things you have to factor in.

When did it come out and what did it contribute?

Example. Bruce Lee actually caused exponential growth in MMA. His whole philosophy was to take what works, throw away what doesn't. He mixed boxing, Wing Chun, Fencing and Savate to create Jeet Kune Do which he regrets even naming his style as a martial arts as his belief was to continue to mix all martial arts.

Is he the best MMA fighter? Probably not, MMA didn't really exist back in those days. But is he notable in the MMA community? Yes, because he helped it grow.

Conclusion

So DBZ, it was a anime that any kid or adult could watch when it came out including Pokemon. It helped break Anime onto American soil when it was on Toonami. It actually struggled and prevailed and paved way to other Animes. Yes, it is one of the greatest animes of all time because it helped bring anime to America, not many other animes have that in their resume.

DBZ is highly overrated better anime out there.

@nickzambuto: It depends what you like, I find DBZ seems to be everyone's jumping on point to anime but is it one of the best, would be a matter of opinion. For me I prefer anime with rich storyline and my god it has to be serious can't put up with the childish jokes.

Anime comes down to a few groups theres the group that loves DBZ, Bleach, One Piece and Naruto. Then normally the opposite group dislikes those anime and prefers animes such as Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist ect..

Personally I enjoyed the Aizen saga of Bleach but the fillers are terrible and as for One Piece and Naruto, my god epic fail IMO. I enjoyed DBZ when I was younger but trying to rewatch it was painful.

I have no idea who this person is or what his qualifications may be, but I'd be inclined to agree with him.

DBZ was a fun anime, but it had an incredibly weak plot, was riddled with plot holes and inconsistencies, was just terrible at building any sense of urgency or drama, and it had extremely one dimensional characters, with only a select few getting any sort of real character development.

I love DBZ and all, but it is what it is. A fun, action packed anime about superpowered men fighting each other and making huge explosions.

For Todays' trendy crowd? Probably not.

DBZ, like any anime, had faults.

Here's the thing. Dragonball Z was pretty simple. There were bad guys, we had heroes, the good guys suffered some major casualties, but always won in the end.

It's the Superman of Anime. Great for it's day, but crowds have changed. They want more grey characters, romance, and possibly more angst.

Dragonball Z was the kind of show, you could come home from school and, after missing a week of it for whatever reason, you could catchup pretty quickly and get right back into it. That, among other things, tell me that that was a great show. Simply put, the quality of the show was always great in my opinion. It's the audience that has changed.

In terms of iconography, definitely. It is pretty much the most well known creator of many tropes.

In terms of actual quality, hell no. DBZ is a mediocre anime at best for action and comedy. It is no master storytelling.

This. Dragonball has been more enjoyable than Z.

DBZ was kind of dumb and it's kind of popular now ( worldwide), but as new animes/Mangas like One Piece, Naruto, Toriko and other animes come along, DBZ does get pushed to the back. It is popular because it was cool and the characters were weird looking and powerful, but in terms of quality, in isn't the best. It isn't the best in my book.

The answer to this question is based on opinion. In my opinion DBZ is one of the best anime of all time. Others disagree and frankly I couldn't care less. They're entitled to their opinions the same way I'm entitled to mine.

The japanese manga being good does not in any way effect my view as an english speaking fan of the anime that is being discussed. Title of the thread asks about the anime, and since that is what I've been exposed to that is what I answered about.

Filler is a part of the anime so it counts.

Translation errors effect the quality of the anime that I and most people in everywhere except Japan were exposed to, so it counts.

Not in my opinion.

To me, it is the best.

Original, since the OP asked about DBZ and not DKZ Kai. Though admittedly I like Kai purely because it did trim the fat that was bogging down the original. Still wouldn't classify it as one of the greatest anime ever though.
