First Act - Iron Man. Stark/RDJ absolutely nailed it .Thor "growth" is what? The day/night he arrives and cant't lift Mjolnir, the drinking with Erik and then the hero moment vs the Destroyer?

Second Act - Captain America. I don't think the Dark World is terrible, it just doesn't do anything beyond being a sword and sorcery adventure in the modern era. Iron Man 2 is okay but it can't juggle everything in a way that gives the points enough gravitas.

Third Act - This is the big toss-up for people between Civil War and Ragnarok. I've got problems with both but Civil War left a much larger impact on me.

Despite my extremely "meh, let me skip half this" reaction to rewatching the first Cap films, he absolutely wins the trilogy debate.

First act: Iron Man, even though I actually enjoyed the First Avenger quite a bit.

Second act: Captain America

Third act: Captain America

The first ones were all good in their own ways, but I have to go with IM.

The Winter Soldier and Civil War are miles ahead as far as the second and third acts go though.

Captain America Trilogy by far. Iron Man 2 and 3 are awful and Thor: The Dark World is the worst MCU movie.

First Act: Iron Man is the bellweather for origin stories. Although I love the first Thor movie (because I am a JMS junkie), The First Avenger is a better movie, particularly because it's tone is more even and the comedic moments don't jar you out of the suspension of disbelief. Thor fails at that and you can see where JMS outlined a lot of the story, but others filled in. It never feels like Thor really goes through a trial and it always irks me compared to what JMS put his characters through on B5.

Second Act: Although I didn't find The Winter Soldier to be as entertaining as some (the plot was weirdly predictable and Redford was under utilized); I loved it's attention to combat details... even as I got bored with those fights. The knife fight on the bridge is one of the best displays of an intelligent struggle between two skilled opponents. Iron Man 2 and The Dark World were oddly abysmal in the same exact way. There was an overload of exposition, under-utilized villains, gag scenes contrasted against darker themes in a jarring, rather than fluid manner. They both had some great character moments too, but they just didn't deliver enough of everything else to matter.

Third Act: I have mixed feelings here. Having been born just before we ticked into the 80s, the 70s-esque sci-fi aspects of Ragnarok were a fun callback to my childhood watching those movies and TV shows. Civil War had lots of great character development, but the plot (as opposed to the theme) had some weird moments. All movies make logical leaps but this one wasn't quite as convincing for me as it was for others. I enjoyed Iron Man 3 overall because it was quirky, but the ending seemed rushed and poorly plotted. Like the Dark World and The Winter Soldier; I yawned a lot through the final battle.

Cap has the most even trilogy, Thor and Iron Man have weird issues. Thor fails in the first act where Iron Man succeeds, then Iron Man 3 fails where Ragnarok succeeds.

  4. Overall, Iron Man trilogy slightly over Captain America trilogy. I think Cap had the strongest individual movie with Winter Soldier though (while arguably also having the weakest with TFA).
