QUESTION?

The Sonic 2 Movie Novelization has an incredible speed feat for Sonic that does not retcon the film.

"the faster a super speedy alien hedgehog could move, the more it seemed like everything went in slow motion. So, when Sonic jumped from the truck and pulled off its wheels while it was still in motion. The action felt like a month to him" (Sonic 2 Novelization).

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (2022) "Sonic Stopping The Robbery" Movie Clip - YouTube (a link to a youtube video of the bank robber scene this quote is referring to. Time 2:31-2:37 for the dismantle feat)

If we take this literally. HOW FAST IS SONIC?

I saw someone try to answer this, but wasn't sure about the math behind it.

They explain that 1 visual of Sonic covered the length of the truck in 0.25 seconds. The Truck was 6.8 meters long. Giving a speed of 97.92kmph.

Then, they multiplied Sonic's speed by the difference in time.

- They simplified the 30-day month in 6 seconds to 5 days in 1 second.

0.25s = 97.92kmph

1s = 391.68kmph

1min(60x)= 23,500.8kmph (Mach 19.032)

1hour(60x)= Mach 1141.924

1day(24x)= Mach 27406.18 (SoL 0.0311)

5days(5x)= Mach 137030.904 (SoL 0.155)

They aimed for a lowball value since they were unsure as to how they would attempt to calc all the visual representations of Sonic swarming the truck.

I saw someone recommend using the Time Dilation formula... would this work?

I would appreciate a second pair of eyes.

It's based on a statement from a dubiously canon novel that can easily be chalked up to flowery speech or hyperbole.

But it isn't outlandish as we do see Sonic slow mo lasers during the Siberian thundra fight

Movie novelizations are often hyperbolic especially when it comes to speed. However, given Sonic's other speed feats, this wouldn't be out of the ordinary.

Sonic's speed is pretty inconsistent... One minute he's subsonic, and the next massively hypersonic.

@killianduclark: It is not too out of question to consider though.

The Novelization(s) have many amazing speed feats

- [Novelization 1] The narration describes Sonic as "faster than lightning." Mach 351.89+. If this were to refer to the return stroke, then it may be roughly 1/3 SoL

- [Novelization 1] Sonic thinks of travelling the entire Great Wall of China in a heartbeat. Assuming Sonic can achieve this feat, the average BPM (beat per minute) is 80; the average BPS (beat per second) is 1.3. Assuming the total length of the Great Wall (21,196.18km), this gives us a speed of Mach 47,535.3

- [Novelization 2] Describes Sonic's perception of time during the dismantling of the armoured truck: "Sonic jumped from the truck and pulled off its wheels while it was still in motion. The action felt like a month to him." If taken literally, this tells that Sonic perceived 1 month in the span of 6 real seconds.

- [Novelization 2] When flying around the Egg-Robo, the Egg-Robo repeatedly fails to tag Sonic, then it says "Super Sonic was like a beam of light." Potentially comparing Super Sonic to light speed.

- [Novelization 1] During the City fight with Eggman, Sonic is defined as going at Hyper Speed. Hyper Speed is defined as "a speed that is faster than the speed of light." Mach 874,030.49+

- [Novelization 1] Claims that Sonic was "travelling at a pace outside the boundaries of reality."

- [Novelization 2] Super Sonic was so powerful that when he willed himself to lose the Emeralds, he used his power to send the Chaos Emeralds out of him. This event describes Sonic's release of the Emeralds: "moving at an ungodly speed. They blasted through space and time itself. Gone forever."
