Title pretty much covers it. How fast is it? I searched it up and I came up with different answers such as Mach 290, Mach 1280 and even saw one that resulted in a six digit Mach value.

So does anyone have any idea as to how fast the average lightning bolt is?

1/3 to 1/10 the speed of light. The visible part of lightning that is the initial charge which is invisible is much slower. Like a 1/1000 the speed of life.

The bottom tip of a lightning bolt traveling from a cloud to the ground can travel at up to 1/3rd the speed of light.

A bolt of lightning arcing from the atmosphere can travel at up to 300 mach.

This seems to be the most accurate answer.

The stepped leader (coming down) is Mach 286 and the return stroke (basically the flash) is 1/3 speed of light.

The outdated research from the 80’s showed that the average Mach speeds was Mach 200+

New research shows its Mach 1000+

Of course this is the average as there is no definite speed for lightning because it can range all over the place due the amount of power I think.
