Poll Has the 2012 Avengers movie aged poorly? (95 votes)

Yes 35%
No 65%

After deciding to re-watch this film, I was shocked at how...strange this film was? It feels very dated to me. While it was released in 2012, it feels more like a dated mid 2000s movie. It has a cheesy feel to it, characters acting strange and the dialogue is odd. Some weird shots too.

I rank Infinity War as one of the best comic book films of all time (top 5), but this first Avengers film is so.... weird.

I honestly think between The Dark Knight Rises and 2012 Avengers, that TDKR aged much better by comparison.

Thoughts?

No. It did good at what it tried to do and it's still felt today. The MCU just wouldn't be the same without Avengers.

No not really. The movie isn’t bad it’s just really average. It’s a pop corn flick that you can enjoy with you family. That’s pretty much what it’s always been and it has not changed from that.

Either way it’s a film that set up characters to become something different or greater

I think people put it on a high pedestal When it came out because of the novelty factor.. truth is like someone said it was never really a great movie. Still fun as heck, but I agree dark knight aged much better

Nah I don’t think so. I still really enjoy it. It really has a different style then the Russo’s Avenger films tho. It’s worst crime I think is the fact that it relies on the viewer to have already seen at least 2-3 other films to understand why the plot is what it is, but that’s nitpicking. I def nothing revolutionary in terms of writing/dialog/direction, and It’s biggest charm is seeing all those characters from their own movies in one big team for the first time on that scale, but it gets the job done extremely well for what it was meant to do. At this point in the comicbook movie genre we’re spoiled on the concept of shared cinematic universes and team up films that it isn’t special anymore.. So I can see why some may look back on this one and kind of Pooh-Pooh it, as it really doesn’t do anything but provide the team-up which we’re all accustomed to.

As far as TDKR comparo, I do agree that its aged better. But then I again I’ve always thought of it as the superior film, not to mention that Nolan’s Dark Knight films just exist on a higher level of quality in comparison to the MCU...but that’s probably a discussion for another thread

No, some lines of dialogue sound a bit more corny than they used to, but I overall I still believe it’s a fun romp. I watched it again last year and enjoyed it once again.

I think it's actually aged a lot better than some of the newer MCU flicks personally.

I think TDKR is much better movie that came out the same year, but Avengers 1 is IMO something special, mainly for what it did for the superhero genre.

It absolutely nailed the team aspect, with overall solid direction, acting, writing and action. I agree that at certain points it looks very weird, the cinematography is a little cheesy here and there, but overall, I still think it's a solid popcorn film. And you can say IW or EG or CW are better movies, but you have to think about the fact that those all had a source of inspiration to draw from in terms of how to do a good superhero team story. Avengers 1 had nothing of the sort.

Yes. The big appeal at the time was seeing all these characters on screen or the first time. Which we are now desensitized to.

I had a blast with it the first time I've seen it. Even kept rewatching it because of how well balanced and well executed it was, even its flaws weren't significant because of that. But then, after milking the same tone, the same structure and the same dynamics in the future, looking back at it there is nothing worth remembering now.

I've not seen it for a approximately 2 years, it is a product of its time, but I wouldn't say it has aged poorly. It definitely has the early 2010s vibes and has a different style than the mor recent MCU movies, but we're in a completely different time and age now because the world has evolved.

Just because it's still enjoyable doesn't mean that you didn't notice the drop in quality.

Actually, all of MCU movies feel dated after the passage of five years and more.

Poorly executed, nonsensical characterization ("i'm Always Angry", basically the 2012 version of "Your mother's name is Martha too?"), forced interactions and stock 'argument' dialogue (We're not a team, we're a time bomb.", subtle.), and a total lack of dramatic heft give a very light (story-wise, not tone), one-note, TV episodic feeling to what should have been a complex, multi- layered epic.

Overall, a conglomeration of "fanboy" moments vainly stitched together to attempt some sort of narrative.

@frozen: Seeing as how the majority of film critics and film goers still consider The Dark Knight Rises to be the one of the top films of the genre, along with Nolan being a flawless director seemingly incapable of being involved with a bad film, I have no doubt that the Dark Knight Rises was the top film of 2012. The comparison does not hold since one film is a classic and the other is a money grab underwear smear.

I haven't seen it since 2012, but I remember after seeing it at the time, I felt like half of the runtime of the movie was Stark trying to be funny, and the other half, which was the actions scenes, wasn't that astounding either.

By far the biggest wtf of that movie though is the fact that they seemed to think F-35B has gatling guns inside its freaking air intakes.
