Sup Vine.

I’ll keep it short and sweet. Kinda getting into graphic novels (really liked Death of Superman), so I had some Facebook friends recommend some good reads. Now my Amazon wishlist is at around 20 with novels such as Maximum Carnage, Batman: Knightfall, Civil War, Planet Hulk and Punisher: MAX.

My two part question:

1) What are some good GRAPHIC NOVELS to start off with for some of my faves/folks I’m curious about like Apocalypse, Gambit, Juggernaut, Omega Red, Sabretooth, Lobo, Black Panther, Hulk and the Annhilators.

2) In General, what are some must have DC/Marvel GRAPHIC NOVELS?

Thanks in advance, Vine.

Apocalypse

Age of Apocalypse

Gambit

Gambit is not really that popular and doesn't many good comics (IMO) but check out X-Men Origins: Gambit

Juggernaut

Same thing as Gambit but check out Nothing can Stop the Juggernaut

Omega Red

Don't think Omega Red has any graphic novels (that i know of)

Sabretooth

He doesn't any have any ones centered around him but do check out Mutant Massacre

Lobo

Lobo : Unbound

Black Panther

Captain America/Black Panthers : Flags of our Fathers

Hulk

Pretty obvious, Planet Hulk.

In General, what are some must have DC/Marvel GRAPHIC NOVELS?

  • The Dark Knight Returns
  • The Man without Fear
  • Daredevil : Born Again
  • Kravens Last Hunt
  • Kingdom Come
  • Old Man Logan

I would recommend the above.

Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment actually is a Marvel Graphic Novel (49th actually), and it is the one I would recommend to everyone.

Watchmen

All Star Superman

Dark Knight Returns

Kingdom Come

DC: New Frontier

I’d say those 5 are the most essential DC graphic novels and arguably the best as for the characters I’m only super knowledgeable on the Hulk.

Planet Hulk, World War Hulk and World War Hulk: Incredible Hercules would give you the entire 25 issue saga by Greg Pak but for Hulk honestly anything with Peter David, Greg Pak or Paul Jenkins name pick it up its fantastic. Also get his current series of Immortal Hulk when it comes out in GN format as its stellar.

Avenger and Hulk, thanks for the recommendations. I keep seeing Watchmen, so eventually I’m sure I’ll check it out. Dark Knight Returns, that has popped up too, may snag it. Kingdom Come is on my list already. :) As a Hulk fan, I can appreciate ya, Hulk. :)

King, The Man Without Fear has surfaced as well, guess I’ll throw that up there too. I’ll check on that Lobo and Apocalypse. I saw Sabes with a versus kinda cover of him and Logan, ever heard of it? Sucks about Arkady...perhaps a Weapon X novel? Thanks again for everything too, man!

@dre_savage: No prpblem at all, hope you enjoy any of the recommendations you decide on.

Hahaha Hulk is awesome and I’m also a huge Juggernaut fan but I’m not an expert on what his defining stories are although i will say whenever him and Hulk square off its a must witness.

The Death of Captain Marvel. To this day, it still hits home for me, and I'm not even much of a Mar-vell fan

It's my favorite death story, only rivaled by The Dark Phoenix saga imo. I think it gets overlooked a lot compared to Death of Superman, Death of Wolverine, Death of Captain America, etc because Mar-Vell isn't as popular, but I think his death means a lot more.

On top of this, I recommend reading Captain Marvel(with Genis Vell) vol 4 and 5. Though it's not quite as good without knowing who Genis is

Iron Man: Extremis is a really good pick, it actually makes the character of Tony Stark interesting for once, and the story is nicely closed off, so you don't need to read anything to understand the plot, which is lacking in many good stories.

I'll give you a tip for Knightfall- It's fine to skip the second volume, it really doesn't have much to justify getting it other than minor plot threads.

Also a good Spiderman one is The Death of Jean DeWolff. Pick it up when you can, it's pretty good and much different from usual Spiderman stories.

Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth by Grant Morrison is really good. It's practically the book which inspired the game.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore is also worthwhile read. It is different than the movie if that's all you have to go on.

Long Halloween, Dark Victory and Hush by Jeph Loeb, Year One by Frank Miller, Riddle Me That by Shane McCarthy, No Mans Land written by a bunch of different people, Going Sane by J.M Dematties [Probably misspelled his name], all Bat Books by Grant Morrison, Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller [Not a fan but most love it], Killing Joke by Alan Moore, Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader by Neil Gaiman Bane Of The Demon by Chuck Dixon and Heart Of Hush by Paul Dini is everything major you need for Batman comics.
