General Mills and DC Comics Give Some Famous Monsters a Makeover

In a press release, General Mills and DC Comics announced their partnership in the redesign of some classic cereal characters.

Monsters Cereals partnered with four DC Comics artists to redesign packaging for the Monsters. The partnership stemmed from the DC Comics artists’ love for Monsters Cereals. The artists redesigned both the front and back panels of the cereal boxes, giving the three Monsters a new look and creating unique comic strips for the back of the boxes. The packaging will be available as limited-edition collector’s items for the 2014 Halloween season only.

For the first time ever, General Mills has partnered with four DC Comics artists to redesign this year’s packaging for Monsters Cereals. DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Jim Lee redesigned Boo Berry, Dave Johnson gave Franken Berry a facelift, and Terry and Rachel Dodson restyled Count Chocula. The partnership stemmed from the DC Comics artists’ love for Monsters Cereals and their enthusiasm for the opportunity to reinterpret the Monsters characters.

“There are many lifelong fans of Monsters Cereal at DC Entertainment so we were excited when the Monsters team at General Mills reached out to us to help design their packaging,” said Lee. “It’s not Halloween without Monsters, and we hope everyone loves the new designs just as much as we do.”

How are these "redesigned?" It's more like.... the EXACT same characters just drawn by different artists. THEY DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO CHANGE THEM ONE IOTA!

Mighty Monarch, dude lol that's the whole point of them being redesigned. When something is drawn differently...looks different, hence redesign. Like Superman in N52 prior to that looked different.

Terry and Rachel did the best, but Boo Berry is still the tastiest.

That's not the same. Superman actually was redesigned in the new 52. His costume was changed, he was made to look younger, etc. He just wasn't drawn by someone else, but his characteristics were changed. These characters have the same general look, but drawn by someone else, so they look more another artists rendering, not redesign (as the overall design is the same).

It is the same. This change just isn't as "dramatic" as the comic book character changes. I'm just pointing out that a new updated/changed look is a redesign, as long as there's a remote, subtle change it's a redesign. But not just to look younger Superman, it was to look edgier and modernized as well. I remember DC saying this in an older interview right before N52. Plus it's 2009-14 currently not 1940's so I agree with their redesign/update of Superman to be honest. Hell, even Marvel is doing it with their characters by changing characters, genders and looks of the costumes. It's something companies do from time to time to keep things fresh yet original.

Boo Berry updates:(not so much the same, but updated): Notice the obvious changes

1. Different hat color from original concept, longer arms from first update to second.

2. Different facial structure

3. Different eyebrows in the more modernized versions of boo from black to more of a dark blue and larder.

4. Smaller hat then before. Jim's design.

5. Eyebrows slanted differently, Jim's design and a bit larger.

6. Mouth flap is larger & has more of space between mouth and teeth from older design which was smaller and closer to the mouth.

7. Eyes while having the same expression are farther apart then before, notice the classic and design prior to Jim's eyes are literally next to each other.

8.Teeth are slightly larger and more detail in the back.

Of course there are certain things that will never change like "The S on the chest" obviously but that doesn't mean you can't update/change the overall look, style of the character. Superman you can is still Superman but it's not the exact same as before.

This does NOT look like the same exact Superman, as someone who's been reading him since forever...someone new could easily mistake this for two entirely different characters. I don't mean to obsess over it or anything but just pointing out as an artist myself there are obvious differences, while trying to remain true to the character's origin.

I mean, the art looks great on these, but redesign is a bit of hyperbole I think.

They look almost exactly the same, did they really need to do an entire company crossover for this. Also got point out that Franken Berry looks like he should be playing a keyboard.

Boo looks very different but I think Franken Berry is the least changed
