First Official Still From Bumblebee: The Movie, a Transformers Spin-off

Here's a statement from the director, Travis Knight (Kubo and The Two Strings):

“I wanted to approach this massive, expansive franchise and really focus in on a tiny corner of the canvas. Everything I’ve tried to do at Laika, searching for an artful blend of darkness and light, intensity and warmth, humour and heart, I wanted to bring to the Transformers franchise.”

“At its core it’s just a beautiful love story between two broken souls who find each other and heal each other,” he adds. “I grew up loving those classic Spielbergian Amblin films. And we’re trying to evoke that kind of emotion in this movie, fusing a rich coming-of-age story with some sci-fi insanity."

I'm cautiously optimistic. It's the first non-Bay movie, and 80s aesthetic + Hailee Steinfeld.

Wait is this a love story between a girl and a car?

I'm not interested at all. I've long since given up on the Transformers franchise. Also, I think this will flop. Here are 3 reasons.

1. Audiences seem to be growing tired of the Transformers. I believe The Last Knight was the lowest gross of the whole franchise.
2. Spinoff-prequels tend not to do as well as main franchise installments. Just compare Rogue One to The Force Awakens, or Fantastic Beasts to the other Harry Potter movies.
3. Intense competition. It opens the same day as Aquaman, and four days before Marry Poppins returns.

Didn't know Bay wasn't on this project.

"spin-off" implies it'll be about the character. Transformers movies are only ever about the stupid annoying humans and their stupid annoying human drama.

I need to see what he looks like Transformed before I get excited. This still looks like a 1970's magazine ad.

Scott's one of my personal gods, but I'm still shaky on anything Transformer related.
